'When You're Strange'

'When You're Strange' is an exhibition documenting the rise to fame of the legendary super group 'The Doors'. When you consider that as a quartet they were only together from 1965 to 1971 it's pretty interesting.  This collection of works mainly shows previously unpublished work , it's sure to be quietly significant for those who call themselves fans, and there are undoubtedly fans. The images have been taken by five of the bands favourite photographs and capture at a glimpse how they rose to fame, 32.5 million albums in the US alone. These photographs also capture in particular the intriguing characters of not only Morrisson but also Manzarek, Densmore and Krieger, and give an indication as to why in the sixties this group were the most controversial group of their time. Nearly forty years after 'The Doors' split, they remain to be one of the most influential bands of rock. Newly scouted native, Zach Durham of Fulton, NY is creating some buzz in the industry. Snatched up his senior year of high school and immediately signed with Ford NY he's ready to take over the runways this coming seasons. With his classic vintage male model looks he's bringing back the "old school" modeling. With his contrasting blue eyes and brown hair you cannot help but develop a slight stare.

Standing 6'1.5 Zach keeps his body in check by playing sports- soccer, lacrosse and basketball. His striking bone structures comes from his roots, he is Native American and Latin. Look for Zach this fashion week, he's sure to walk several shows.

Retro Movie Picks

Think modern day life is a drag? Sick of modernized mumbo jumbo? Feel like your iPhone is taking over your life? Why not watch a movie set in the '70s? Sometimes it's as easy as that. Three picks:

Now And Then - A movie meant for everyone's inner 12-year-old girl. Great soundtrack ("Sugar Sugar" by the Archies; "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5), and if this movie doesn't make you want to buy an old Schwinn bike, you must be crazy.

Dazed And Confused - A tribe of teenagers on the last day of school in 1976. Matthew McConnaughey saying "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age," is classic.

The Virgin Suicides - Sofia Coppola's '70s masterpiece about the five Lisbon sisters and the boys who obsess over them. French electronic band Air did the soundtrack, and Josh Hartnett as the aviator sunglasses-wearing crush object is priceless.

Nothing like a retro movie to brighten your day and maybe even inspire you to buy a pair of bell bottoms. Hey, you never know.

The Creators Project = Technology + Creativity

Mmm, collaborations. 2010 is a good year for ‘em: Kanye West and Bon Iver, Jonathan Saunders and Topshop, and now a whole slew of artists, musicians, and multimedia wizards are coming together for The Creators Project. Half online, half real-world, The Creators Project is a combination of “modern day media channel” and “content creation studio” designed to give people like DJ/producer Diplo, director Spike Jonze, and designer Alexandre Herchcovitch opportunities to reach new audiences.

The Creators Project also puts on installations, discussions, and performances in different cities, starting with New York back in June, London in July, Sao Paulo a few weeks ago, Seoul this past weekend, and Beijing for the finale in September. It’s been a crazy summer of international art, music, and culture – check out the results of the project (everything from 3D skate photography by Sebastian Denz to Andy Mueller artwork) on The Creators Project website.

Sufjan Stevens New Album

Sufjan Stevens is releasing his first full length album in 5 years on October 12th. The album entitled The Age of Adz has been said to have more electronics and less banjo. He released a new song yesterday, I walked, and it definitely has the electro-vibe but with the same touching Sufjan lyrics we know and love. This song is actually quite similar to the sound of Dalton M.

Stevens is set to tour on October 12th for two months. If you are interested in seeing him live, you should act fast because some shows are already sold-out.

Fashion Night Out 2010 - NYC

One night a year New York City throws the biggest, most epic block party solely dedicated to fashion. Grab your girls on September 10th and hit the city streets for the annual: Fashion Night Out! Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island will fill your senses with the sights and sounds of live DJ’s, cocktails, make-overs, fashion shows, designer appearances, models, new product launches, and most importantly SHOPPING for the up coming Fall season. The night will go as late as 11pm (how late the shops will stay open) and will benefit, not only the fashion industry but the New York City AIDS Fund. Don't be scared if you can't get the first ticket out to New York, other cities are also participating; Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas. Street Style: Shorts and Boots

As you know I love to emphasize the transition of summer style to fall. When I see a good style tip on the street I will definitely take a picture of it, after all that is my role as the CHAOS street style blogger.

The other night I saw this cute girl wearing little vintage boots and shorts. I love the laid back rocker look. The boots add a bit of warmth for when the leaves start changing colors. She can even add some chunky socks and be all set. Her shorts are from LF and her trendy striped tank is from a surf shop in Australia.

My favorite fall trends are boots and stripes combined with a little pair of shorts is great for when it is still too hot to cover up.

Velvet Wonder

Among one of my favorite fall 2010 trends is velvet—it’s romantic, soft to the touch (if only all textiles could present such tactile pleasure) and very much reminds me of Interview with a Vampire. It also reminds me of a much beloved red holiday dress with a lace collar I owned as a child, and if you are a female who grew up in the 90’s you probably once had a similar frock in your possession. The dress pictured here is from Nanette Lepore’s Fall 2010 RTW collection and while I think both the color and cut are captivating, the overall look is perhaps a bit overwhelming for the every day. Try a shorter dress paired with black tights and ankle boots for a fresh fall spin on this classic.

'Girl With Bird'

In 1994 Leah Gordan became the official photographer for the amnesty international report in Haiti. Gordan is a photographer, curator and film maker, whose ability to document life is nothing short of a God given talent.Lucy Gordan has exhibited widely in both private and public shows, however it is her present offering 'The Invisibles' in the beautiful Riflemaker Gallery, London which I was lucky enough to stumble upon. 'The Invisibles' is Gordan's reaction and response to religious and historic realities and subjects. Through these colorless images Gordan explores and contradicts the precept ion that photography 'could only serve to disprove the divine'. Haiti appears to be for Gordan where this exploration begins, and although she has also documented the likes of London and Vodou. It seems that Haiti having journeyed there many times since her first visit in 1991, has become for this exhibition the correct setting to create her story. It is very obvious that Lucy Gordan by now has a respectful and honest knowledge of Haiti and its people. For example, in 'Girl with Bird', Cite de Soleil, the sitter, a young girl holds gently in still and calm a bird in her hands. The picture is the essence of peace and calm, and yet the setting of the shot was in 1993, classified as 'the most dangerous place on earth' by the UN. This is Gordan's calling to document and understand something so unimaginable. Showing until the 11th of September at London's Riflemaker Gallery, 79 Beak Street, 'The Invisibles'.

Back-to-School Blues

The month of August is that melancholy time of year in a girl’s life when she must cope with the death of yet another wonderful summer. I like to call it: “The Back-to-School Blues,” but luckily it’s a syndrome that can easily be mended with “The Back-to-School Shopping Trip.” Here are some of my 3 must haves for your Fall 2010 semester.

The shoes- Whether you’re going back to school or back to the office, a good set of heels will get you going in the right direction. These Kate Spade New York "Karmela" Oxford Pumps are perfect for prancing around the office or your school’s newspaper room.

Scotland born Freddie Rayner was scouted while waiting for the bus in his school uniform getup. Without thought he was immediately signed by Annalease at Stolen Models. Insane chizzled bone structure, striking green eyes along with his perfectly placed beauty mark and flawless skin there is no wonder why he was snatched up with a quickness. Recently picked up by Nevs in London, Freddie will make his debut on the international market, first starting with the Spanish shows. After that HELLO London, Paris, and I'm sure New York.

Street Style: At the MET

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is portrayed in the media as a place where fashionable teens hang out. Shows like Gossip Girl depict posh girls eating lunches on the stairway of the MET's main entrance.

I decided to take a look for myself for some fashionable finds. These two girls were just leaving when I spotted them in front of the MET. I liked their casual girly looks. The one on the left is in a lovely floral tank she got at Zara and some light wash vintage shorts that add to the summery mood. Her bright yellow shoes also helped to make her look playful. The girl on the right has a rocker girly vibe. With a lace tank from LF and a little charcoal jeans skirt that she got at a consignment store. I love how she wore purple Converse that made her style urban cool. Next time your at the MET see what fashionable girls you can find!

An X-Men Movie, '60s Style

Just when you thought they had run out of ideas for comic book movies, here's one that actually might end up being pretty cool. Heads up, Marvel aficionados, the new X-Men movie, X-Men: First Class, will be set in the Sixties. No word yet on how well they might execute the story, but a '60s-era X-Men movie seems ironically to be a whole lot fresher than one set in a futuristic world.

Movieline broke the news, reporting that Professor X and Magneto will "meet and conceive of the X-Men" in the film, that the technological effects will have an "early James Bond" vibe, and that the costumes will be old-school - Mad Men attire instead of vinyl jumpsuits, perhaps? Director Matthew Vaughn and producer Bryan Singer have taken on quite a challenge in setting the X-Men against a backdrop of the JFK presidency and the civil rights movement, but this just may be a comic book movie to break the mold. We can expect X-Men: First Class to hit theaters in the summer of 2011, but that's no reason not to get excited now.

Tao Lin: Internet Stunt Master

Meet Tao Lin, a 27-year-old NYC-based hipster writer. He has written a short story collection (Bed), a novella (Shoplifting From American Apparel), a novel (Eeeee Eee Eeee), and two poetry collections, and now his latest novel Richard Yates will be published on 9/7/2010. Tao Lin is not merely a writer; he is a master of elaborate publicity stunts, including one time when he plastered his promotional stickers all over the door of the Gawker offices.

Now he's at it again. Lin was recently profiled by the New York Observer, but once he discovered a different "culture" story was beating him in popularity on the Observer website (an article about Jersey Shore's Snooki, as it were), he went on a miniature Twitter rampage, urging his followers to retweet him "if you want 'snooki' defeated re 'most read culture story' " and to click repeatedly on the link to the article on him. His followers came through, and triumphantly, Tao Lin's article came out on top. It has since fallen in the ranks, but never underestimate the power of the Internet, or the power of people who enjoy toying with it!

Less is More.

We all know what makeup is AND more importantly, what it does for us. Could you imagine leaving your house in the morning without it? No way! At least we hope you take pride in yourself and respect how you present yourself to the outside world. There is a fine line because at times (usually if you don't know what you're doing) makeup can make some look worse. When that happens it is called wearing too much makeup. We don’t want to look fake, we want to look natural and beautiful. The CHAOS quote of the day is ‘less is more’, write it down, keep it natural and stick to the tones that match your skin color. First off, what every lady needs is a good foundation, one that matches your skin tone. So many people go wrong here and are mismatched, and that my friend, is the beginning to a gigantic problem. We love the flawless look so make sure you are wearing the right color, it should BLEND into your natural skin tone.

Make sure you pick a blush or bronzing balls that will show off your cheek bones. The color can only be a few shades darker than your foundation. Obviously, a great mascara is needed, eyes can be what makes your face stand out. It is important to know what your best feature is, if it is your eyes focus on your eyes and tone down the lips, draw attention to one facial feature at a time. If your lips are full and you posses the perfect pout, focus on that.  Makeup should only highlight your features, it isn't there to create them. So remember, look fresh faced, feel natural and remember less is more!

Camping Inspired Fall Boots

Anyone who knows me or has even passed by me on the street could probably tell you that I do not do the outdoorsy thing. Not only do I not do the outdoorsy thing, but I won’t even lie in a hammock under a tree because I don’t like nature falling on me. I don’t enjoy sitting in the grass and though I have since gotten over it, when I was a baby, my mom had to take me to the beach wearing socks and shoes because I didn’t want my feet to touch the sand. Nevertheless, I am super excited about this fall season’s camping inspired gear. I am currently digging these Belle by Sigerson Morrison Suede Lace-Up Ankle Boots. They kind of remind me of those high heeled Timberland boots that (to my complete bewilderment) were popular a few years back. To be clear, this incarnation is way more fierce, and while I may purchase a pair I will not under any circumstances go hiking.

Material Girl

Looks like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Just recently Madonna and her daughter, Lola had launched their first clothing line called “Material Girl” which is exclusively sold at Macy's. The Mother Daughter pair had teamed up and produced a juniors clothing line that portrays a plethora of different looks including rock chic, skater, bohemian and some 80’s pieces. Looks Lola is following in her Mother’s footsteps on following her dream and becoming a worldwide fashion icon. Everyone with a great fashion sense watches Gossip Girl, sometimes I even watch the episodes to see the trendy outfits that are worn. The “Material Girl” icon is Taylor Momsen, who stars on Gossip Girl as Jenny. Take a glance at the lookbook that has hip photographs of Taylor Momsen modeling the clothing on the streets of Brooklyn and New York. The photographs are amazing; Taylor Momsen brings a unique chic attraction towards the brand. After browsing at the lookbook, there are so many adorable garments that I would love to own. For a young girl who is only 13, I think that Lola has a lot of talent and potential.

Getting Ready to Cover Up

I absolutely love this dress from Giambattista Valli’s fall collection. The black mummy-like sleeves matched with the ruffled skirt are nothing less than sleek and it gets me in the mood for the chilly weather up ahead.

With the end of summer swiftly approaching it’s easy to get sad about having to put away those strappy sandals and thin sun dresses, but this gorgeous ensemble is a reminder of just how sexy the fall season can be. Those black pantyhose mixed with the suede ankle boots makes cleaning out my closet a whole lot easier. After all, I’m going to need a lot more room for all the beautiful new boots and long-sleeved dresses the cold weather is going to bring on. Sayonara, summer.

Go Gothic For Fall

The dark and sometimes morbid fashion ... Gothic! Okay so we are not saying go all out with the black hair, black lips, pale skin, crazy shoes and all black clothes!

Black clothes look great, you can look slim and sexy, black doesn't have to be boring. With the lace that's around at the moment you can really sex up your outfit! If you can't resist a touch of color, then by all means feel free to add colorful accessories if you want to brighten the outfit a little. It's a great time to bring out some of those vintage items. If you own any black vintage then you can step out in the Gothic look with pride.

Shop around for your little black number, dress it up or dress it down. As we mourn over the loss of summer and fall creeps even closer, we shall unite, wear black, look sexy and embrace the colder times ahead!

Street Style: Maxi Dressing

One of my favorite trends of the moment is the maxi. This is a trend that looks good on all body types and can be worn Summer or Fall. I love the way it lengthens the body. Seeing someone in a maxi style adds a wonderful contrast to all of the mini skirts and short shorts prancing around the city.

This stylish women knows how to accessorize to make this maxi dress her own. Her dress is NightCap, I love the pleating, it adds texture and weightlessness and her wonderful statement belt is from Theory. My favorite accessory she is wearing is her sunglasses which are Philip Lim and add to her cool factor.

 So be sure to grab a maxi and take cues from this street fashionista and remember to accessorize.

Pretty Florals Make the Transition to Fall

Although I am in deep denial about this fact, sadly it is no less true: summer is quickly drawing to a close. I didn’t want to have to tell you that in case some of you were in deeper denial than even I, but I think it was time to rip off the band-aid. Soon our tans will fade and these wonderfully balmy nights will be but a distant memory. Most of our summer wardrobe will go into hibernation to make room for new fall and winter must haves and the weather will turn crisp and cool. Despite all this bad news though, we can rest assured that at the very least our flirty floral dresses will survive the seasonal shift. At Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2010 RTW runway show, black tops under floral dresses added both warmth and edge to a favorite summer staple. Be careful though, use of a turtleneck for this look has the potential to end up looking more dowdy and less chic.

My Kind of 90's

One thing I love about fashion is its ability to reincarnate pieces from previous time periods so that they seem fresh and new. This season, Urban Outfitters has created a collection that is inspired by the 90’s. I personally wasn’t a huge fan of 90’s fashion- something about jean overalls just rubs me the wrong way. However, I was sincerely impressed by U.O.’s rendition of popular trends such as grungy tops, blazers, trousers, unconventional fabrics, and platform shoes. The color palette of the collection is cohesive with the fall 2010 vision of many other designers- it's neutral heaven! Rather than sticking to camels, though, U.O. opted for slightly more variation, incorporating blacks, browns, greys, and greens to create a slightly wider color spectrum. The collection also showcased some other 2010 trends, including harem pants, lace details, rompers, and military jackets. A few standout pieces were the velvet dress with a borderline crochet pattern made of lace, the sleeveless pinstripe blouse, the maxi-romper (which is daring, but well worth the risk!), and the trouser shorts. The accessories were marvelous as well. They were very vintage-inspired and included knuckle rigs, messenger bags and corduroy knapsacks, over-the-knee socks, and plenty of wedges, platform heels and lace-up boots. Another thing that made me fall in love with this collection was the eclectic mix of designers- Dolce Vita, Nom de Plume, Sparkle & Fade and Jeffery Campbell were featured the most. I would recommend visiting the website, just click over there to the right on our main site and buying at least one, if not all of the pieces in this collection, as I am sure they will sell out quickly! It’s not every day that you find such a lovely mix of items all in one place, so you heard it from us first—Urban Outfitters knows good style.

The Fashion Interview

Last week I was called in to interview for an internship with Glamour Magazine and was faced with that universal question: “What am I going to wear?” I mean, what do you wear to an interview with an industry that defines style for women everywhere? There’s a lot of advice online that’s geared more towards the business interview, but what about those of us who are looking for work in a more creative industry?

The biggest difference in the business interview and the artistic interview is that you get to express yourself a little bit more. When choosing an outfit you want to show why you’re a unique person while remaining professional, and the best way to do that is through color. Every woman has that one color that they automatically look amazing in. Wear that color.

With only two days before my interview, I had to find something quick, affordable, and classy. I ended up wearing this dress from Urban Outfitters, paired with a simple gold necklace and a pair of peep toe black high heels. I felt great, I was wearing a color that made me glow, and it definitely showed in my interview.

Remember, when you’re comfortable and feel like a million bucks, people will be more likely to think that you are a million bucks.

Say it with flowers, Mr Hodges does.....

and so to Camden, where American artist Jim Hodges has a lot to say and a lot of things to say it with. Hordes creates artifacts and then associates the feelings with these items. For example, flowers with which we associate life and love and all of that blossoming blossoms. However, Hodges lets the viewer create this imagery and then wistfully contradicts the initial feeling with a less delightful undertone. It's like taking and linking love with loss and desire with despair. In many ways, even the way the space is filled and cluttered, is again a sort of unsettling notion. Whether it is enough, (as it should be) too much, and a little smothering, is always lurking among, but then that is the essence. Whether making flower diaries from paper napkins or jewelry cobwebs. Pieces such as 'A kind of Forever' and 'A Line to You' demonstrate well what hordes is trying to spell out, until September at the Camden Arts Centre. Go have a look!

Model Watch Monday: Ksenia, from Russia to NYC...

via Direct Women. This Russian stunner comes to us from Nizhny Novgorod (yes, have a moment with that one), Russia. Her name is Ksenia Golubeva, a Leo, born August 16th, and standing 5'11 she has already staked her claim on the catwalk. Ksenia has truly made her walk her money maker having walked for Dries van Noten, Jil Sanders, Issey Miyake, and others. Her jump to NYC was thanks to Women Direct. They snatched her up (not surprised why) and are giving her the momentum she needs to have some serious staying power in our lovely, fickle industry. I'm sure she'll be dominating editorials left and right soon enough.

Not too sure of her mother agency back in Russia, but who really cares when you've gone straight to the major leagues and got your New York City agency. Do you really need anyone else?

Twit, Twit, Twitter!

Twitter. Who loves it? The “rich source of instant information” is becoming increasingly popular amongst celebrities and normal folk alike. Some tweets are mind-numbingly inane - Kim Kardashian hawking diet pills, for example - and some are actually pretty creative, like when Rick Moody
Wrote a short story called “Some Contemporary Characters” on Twitter in 2009 (Of course, there's also CHAOS Magazine's own CHAOS on Twitter. Then there are tweets that take things to the next level, and these happen to come from Kanye West. He only joined in late July but already has amassed over 600,000 followers. You really have to read his Twitter to believe it, but here’s a sampling:

"Your album good @Justinbieber Playing it at my crib now"
"I got the best leather pants collection since the 80’s"
"Listening to Wu Tang with a suit on #ITHAPPENS"

Though Mr. West’s tweets are sure to exasperate his haters, his Twitter pomposity is like Versailles: expensive and a little over-the-top, but there’s a reason why so many people go see it. So if you find yourself bored out of your mind, head on over to twitter to find some amusing and non relative updates from your "not so favorite people" ... or then again, you could always follow our twitter and get a good laugh, or actually learn some interesting things. ;) @chaosmag

Street Style: Polka Dots

I have been seeing a lot more feminine style on the streets of New York City. 1950s inspired sundresses seem to be very popular. I found this fashionista in the east village. She is wearing a lovely polk-a-dot dress from The Reformation.

I love the clean white with the small back dots, it doesn't overwhelm you like some dotty patterns. The exposed zipper adds a modern touch to an otherwise retro silhouette. This girl was a lot of fun because she posed like a 1950s housewife for the picture. Maybe it's time for us all to pull out some circle skirts and pay homage to that era?

Publishing The Unpublishable

You'd think the purpose of a literary magazine would be to find the best, most 'publishable' pieces of fiction and poetry to share with the world, but The Incongruous Quarterly finds value in the 'unpublishable.' This online literary mag, just launched in July 2010, aims to promote anything that's "too long or too short, too weird, too conventional, ahead of (or behind) the times, genreless, plotless, subjectless, easily pigeonholed or impossible to define."

With pieces by Helen Dewitt ("Chart 2008"), Michael Hingston ("Comic Sans"), and Cole Robertson ("Hangover") in categories of fiction, poetry, and 'Kill Fee,' a section in which writers get to see the writing that a magazine or newspaper was going to run but did not, there's a lot to chew on. James Franco: Hot and Smart

Eat, Pray, Love, the film based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2006 memoir, arrived in theaters on Friday, and boy, was the publicity for that movie unbelievable. You can’t watch television for two minutes without seeing Julia Roberts eating gelato over and over again and hearing that Florence + the Machine song in the trailer. Well done, ad campaign, well done.

One benefit from oversaturating the market is being able to see James Franco in the previews – dang, is that man attractive or what? Besides being ridiculously good-looking and having made one of the funniest guest appearances on 30 Rock ever (playing himself, only with the slight problem of being in love with a Japanese body pillow), Franco is also pretty erudite, getting an MFA in writing at NYU and now accepted to a Ph.D. program at Yale. He also reportedly has plans to write some sort of vampire novel à la Twilight, though something tells me it might just end up better than Stephanie Meyer's creation. Hopefully we’ll get to see the fruits of his labor soon and be able to sigh over his looks and his brain. Sigh.

Mid-Point Music Fest

Cincinnati’s famed Mid-Point Music Fest is scheduled for September 23-25. 250 acts will be performing those three days. Band such as Light Pollution, The Cincy Brass and Oblio will rock crowds from 2:00 in the morning throughout the day and night on that Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

There are a few options for purchasing your tickets. The best bet is the 3 day wristband which gets you entry to all the showcases and waives cover charges. You can also purchase tickets for individual shows, which depending on the venue, will run you $10 or $15 dollars.

Free shows on Fountain Square have been scheduled every Friday until the main event.

Florence and The Machine

It’s that time of the year again, the MTV Music Awards are upon us.

For most people seeing Kanye diss little Taylor Swift or listening to Beyonce (who is married) sing about single ladies is great. This year however, there will be something different for the viewers to enjoy.

UK’s famed indie rocker Florence and the Machine will be performing. Florence and the Machine is composed of Florence Welch and a variety of other artists who play backup for her. Her 2009 album “Lungs” has won critical acclaim. Many may know her for the track “Heavy in Your Arms” which is featured on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack. That song in particular is one of her best.

The MTV Music Awards premieres on Sunday September 12th at 9PM ET.

STAMpede

Though supermodel Jessica Stam has a face that could certainly launch a thousand ships, she will soon prove that her beauty is not the only weapon in her arsenal. The Canadian stunner who inspired the creation of The Marc Jacobs Stam bag and has walked countless runways, has collaborated with friend and designer Rachel Roy on a capsule collection that will debut during this September’s New York Fashion Week and will be available for purchase in October. The collection, which is part of Roy’s modestly priced line for Macy’s, will include a pair of jeans, a cardigan, and a handbag designed by Stam. Behind the scenes footage of the collaboration will be also be available on Twitter and Facebook, which promises to allow those of us not attending the show a sneak peek; and if Stam’s enviable personal style is any indication, her foray into design should not be missed.

Pucker Pick Me Up

I wake up in a pitch-black room, look out my window and see complete darkness, not a single ray of sunlight in the sky. I have plans to go shopping with friends but really, who wants to be productive when the gloomy weather sets up the perfect “lazy day.” What I need is a quick pick me up, something to pull me out of bed to get my day going. I need something to boost my confidence and make me feel alive. That’s when I resort to my staples, I lay in bed thinking and I finally figure it out. I rummage through my makeup bag and find my nude lipstick. I take it out, put it on and I feel like perfection. I am ready to conquer my day no matter what the weather outside may be. It sounds silly, but nude lipstick is the perfect pick me up. It is simple, but does the trick. I don’t always like wearing a bright, heavy lipstick, so it is good to pucker up and put on something a little more natural but still have your lips looking perfectly plump. The best part about nude lipstick is that it can come in a plethora of different shades and can be worn all year round.

Street Style: Stripes

This super trendy girl caught my eye because she was wearing a pattern that I have been seeing everywhere this season. The striped shirt, her shirt is from Bloomingdales, and is the perfect piece to transition into fall because it is very nautical for the beach but also can be paired with pants and a denim over shirt for when the weather starts to get chilly.

I very much enjoyed her menswear inspired oxfords and trouser pants. The oxfords are from Urban Outfitters and the trousers are from a vintage store in London. They add style and class to a simple long sleeve shirt. The all black bottom half help to lengthen, so that the horizontal striped shirt doesn't break her up too much. Her fire red nails also offer the perfect pop of color to an other wise neutral ensemble.

So make sure you have this seasons "It" pattern, stripes. Not only is it the trend of the moment but it is also timeless classic.

All Buckled Up

Last week, while browsing around a sample sale in Soho, I picked up this unusual beauty by Collective Concepts. The simple gray t-shirt dress is made unique by its coffee colored buckle straps that immediately captured the heart of my inner cowgirl. Or should I say my inner Urban Cowgirl.

The back straps were what really sold me on this one. The suspender look on the back of this dress really sets it apart from anything else on the block. The buckle strap is such a simple concept and I really hope to see it pop up more often as the fall season approaches.

I remember the first ring I ever bought was a mood ring from a garage sale. From the same place I also bought mood changing lip color, but that’s a story for another day. Anyway, I loved that I could share my mood with an accessory, when I was blue, it was blue - which may or may not classify me as a loser. Over Gaga

When I sat down to write this post I was flirting with the idea of discussing one of fall’s biggest trends: camel. Then I came across this picture and decided that I couldn’t comfortably ignore it. My apologies to those of you who would have preferred to read a post about taupe colored accessories. This image, taken at Lollapalooza, pretty much sums up the feelings I have been nursing for Lady Gaga as of late. In classic passive aggressive fashion, however, I have been biting my tongue only to reveal my true feelings later in a less composed manner, like that time sophomore year when I fumed for a good forty five minutes before snapping at my roommate for spring cleaning at 4 o’clock in the morning. Although I was completely on board when she made her pant-less debut and believe that she is truly a phenomenal entertainer, Gaga’s usual antics have recently become meaningless and dare I say, trite. The theatrics, that until lately showcased her confidence and individuality, now reek of attention-seeking fame whore. In my opinion this outfit looks less chart topping diva and more hot mess. The Beach Vixen

The countdown is on. We’ve got three weeks of summer left until it’s back to school, back to work, back to reality. Bummer, man.

But that just means you’ve got three weeks to go out with a bang and I think the sexiest way to do that is with a high-wasted bathing suit. I’ve seen a couple of these old-fashioned suits popping up around the beach, but certainly not enough.

Seriously ladies, do not be scared of these vintage bathing suits. At first, I was a bit worried that I would look like my grandmother in this suit from Urban Outfitters, but the minute I put it on I felt like a Hollywood vixen from the 40’s. I was even walking around my apartment in it just for an added confidence boost.

It’s a timeless swimsuit and one, I know, I’ll have in my closet for a years to come. I mean, who knew showing less skin around the pool could be way sexier than putting it all out there?

David Bailey 'Then'

In June the Hamiltons presented a collection of work entitled 'David Bailey, NOW'. Just over a month later 13 Carlos Place is now housing another sensational, the David Bailey showcase, this time simply titled 'THEN'. Whilst it almost seems bazaar that the present has taken residency before the past. You could easily imagine that by placing the exhibitions in such a format that Bailey has something to say or prove, and perhaps he does. Although I imagine, taking my clues from the title that the point of this collection isn't to present something new. There are a few well known images like the iconic Mick Jagger in his fur lined hoodie, but mainly they are well less known. The true beauty of Baileys 'THEN' is that this is a collection of contact sheets,and with these shots you get to observe not only the versatility of the master that is David Bailey, but also the versatility and character of the sitter. 'NOW','THEN' and obviously for the 'yet to come' David Bailey.

Model Watch Monday: New Zealands Mary Smith

Check out this blue eyed beaut hailing from New Zealand, the city of Dunedin to be more specific. Dunedin, not exactly the most thrilling city in New Zealand but they definitely have produced quite a diamond in the rough. Mary is signed with Ali McD after her first visit there, not really much of a surprise. And good picking they did because Mary has already been swooped up my Trump Models in NYC, along with Trump several international agencies has shown interest in Mary. Who wouldn't see a bright future with this one, piercing blue eyes, cute freckles, she definitely leaves a mark.

Street Style: The Leather Skirt

When looking at street style I love to create a mental list of key pieces I see that are the must haves of the season. Seeing the way trendy New Yorkers style these items gives me inspiration for my current wardrobe and I hope it does the same for you.

This fall's "It" item was spotted just around the corner from the Alexander Wang sample sale this weekend. The leather skirt is an essential item for any fashion follower. This trendy New Yorker had on a leather skirt from Top Shop. It was paired with a basic oversize gray shirt from LF that she resourcefully tied on the side adding some drapery and style to the outfit. The amazing thing about this skirt other than the zipper detail is that it's the perfect piece for transitioning into colder weather. When it starts to get chilly this brunette can throw on tights, boots, and a sweater and have an amazing outfit. I also like that this outfit can turn dressy if paired with heels and some jewels. So make your own mental note to buy a leather skirt and see how many different ways you can style it.

For me, September always seems more like the New Year than January 1st itself. Something about the transition from sizzling summer to crisp fall is enough impetus to start over: try a new haircut, go on a wallet-busting shopping trip, or my personal favorite, redecorate! Nothing like a new season to change up your room, apartment, or house.
