The Denim Jacket Debate

I'm pretty sure we all have a denim jacket of some sort hanging in our closets. When was the last time you wore it? If it's collecting dust, maybe it needs an update.

Remember the boxy denim jacket of the '90s? If you can't part with it, bring it to your tailor and have it taken in for a more modern fit.

Maybe your denim jacket isn't even salvageable. Donate the old and update to a tailored denim blazer or sportcoat. Rock the look with slim fit chinos (for the men) or over a dress (for the ladies). Keep the color dark and one-dimensional. The faded, tattered denim look should stay on your legs.

Ready to toss the whole denim jacket idea out the window? Try a loose-fitting denim chambray shirt over your fall corduroys.

Club Monaco Fall 2011 Lookbook

Club Monaco’s Fall 2011 lookbook is “suburban prep” with "lifestyle pieces to carry you throughout the season.” This season’s creative inspiration is drawn from the 50s beatnik movement. Expect to see layers, cardigans, merino wool trousers, grey and navy tweed blazers. Club Monaco is currently promoting washed corduroy pants, slim fit cashmere cardigans, and patterned socks for the well dressed man this fall. Corduroy pants are a fall staple that will wear well with the Club Monaco buck or your favorite boot. The cashmere cardigan is a superior fabric that will keep you a bit warmer than its merino wool counterpart. Lastly, Club Monaco’s navy tweed suit was featured in GQ’s September issue. And you’re right if you guessed the suit flashed patterned socks. What you can anticipate from Club Monaco, like its parent Ralph Lauren, is consistency; consistent, classic, affordable clothing.

Happy 90th Gucci!

Gucci's name is on everyone's tongues this week, and for good reason! The line that opened the Milan Fashion Week last Wednesday, spent the last night of the week bringing it out in style! Now, a party during fashion week may not be that surprising, but this wasn't just any party. The shindig, which brought out everyone from Camilla Belle, to Abbie Cornish, to Debbie Harry and back again, was in honor of Gucci's 90TH BIRTHDAY and the opening of the Gucci Museo in Florence. The guests dined and boozed and chatted the night away after a toast from head honcho Frida Giannini.

Have to hand it to them -- they make 90 look good!

Bottega Veneta: Precision And Textured Elegance At MFW

Without forgoing their signature element of superior craftsmanship, Bottega Veneta brought a flurry of color and texture to the Milan runway for Spring/Summer 2011. From day-wear to evening stunners, every piece in the collection had a wearability to it that still maintained all necessary elements of a luxury statement. Textures, patterns, and colors were all mixed together in an effortlessly playful way and easily sidestepped any danger of confusing the all over look. In a season where bold statements of color and intermixing patterns were the norm, not every collection held it together. There may have been plenty of statements made, but some perhaps not quite as clearly as others. However Bottega Veneta managed to successfully incorporate a large number of different materials and colors into one collection such as leather, wool, silk and polyester blends. A major standout was the glossy white shift dress and the leather black brown and blue paneled dress that followed soon after, not to mention the array of multi colored monochromatic billowing sheer gowns that completed the show.

Get Booted Up For Fall

Fall just might be the best season for fashion. That statement is perhaps a little bold but, while summer is a season of half-nakedness and barely-there clothing, fall is a season of fabrics, textures, colors, and layering, and what better way to celebrate the season than treating yourself to a new pair of boots? Not only will you need them to survive in the snow and rain, but the right boots paired perfectly with dark denim and plaid button downs is essentially a must for the inevitable climate cool-down. Ideally, the top choice should be a rugged, casual boot that communicates your sense of style and also says you can hike the Patagonia at any minute. It's also wise to invest in dress boot to wear with tweed suits, as this combination of business and the outdoors is a great trend to follow this year.

 So, put away the flip-flops and the retro Jordan’s and kick off fall fashion with these CHAOS-approved casual hiking/hunting boots and dress boots (after the jump!)

Fall Fragrances: Keep The Heat Alive

Just because the weather is starting to cool off doesn't mean your allure has to, especially since your scent is the strongest weapon in your man-eating arsenal. Keep the heat going this fall (and the boys knocking) with fragrances that contain hints of spice and earthy notes; think amber, pink pepper, musk, and sandalwood. Choosing fragrances that contain base notes of vanilla and cashmeran are also ideal for those lovely fall days as they create a warm, cozy body ambiance. A scent like Burberry Body (pictured above) is a great choice for any lady, and if you are usually a floral type of gal, it is a nice transition from sweet to musk.

Jil Sander Makes a Clean and Artful Debut

Raf Simons designs for Jil Sanders for the last few seasons have not failed to produce stunner after stunner, and likewise, a solid fan base with it. Simon kept with the minimalist signature of the fashion house, but brought to it a solidly modernist spin. The goal this season was to take one piece that could be considered a classic for the line -- a minimalist white cotton shirt -- and then recreate it, and it's subsequent line, from that. Not totally a new idea in itself, but it definitely took a refined approach to the rest of the line, and is a clear theme from some of his previous work (i.e. the crisp white short sleeve shirts with neon floor length skirts).

This season showed clean, cropped, Grace Kelly-esque lines with subtle blues. Even the patterns that debuted (Gingham and paisley) were kept both modern and simply in a masterful way. By the end of the show Picasso images began gracing the sweaters that topped below knee length skirts, giving the line a whimsical pop!

NEVERMIND the Rest, Grunge is Back in a Big Way

Just in time for the 20th Anniversary of the release of Nirvana's Nevermind, which just re-released in deluxe edition -- it seems that the grunge trend is coming back in a big way. Other than the irony of "grunge" also being "haute couture", the beauty of it really is being able to explore the trend at any budget.

Layers and layers of plaid, lace (dresses mostly), ripped up jeans (both pants, jackets, and everything in between), and clunky footwear make up this anti-establishment trend. While in the past the trend has focused on put on as much as possibly in any manner, this time it's making comeback in the mixing of extremes (think masculine/feminine, expensive/cheap, etc.). So, now's the time to throw on your Chuck Taylors with your favorite girly dress, and most masculine jacket and voila!

Fendi SS'12: Fierce or Frazzled?

With LFW behind us, in comes a whole new onslaught of fashion to drool over in Milan; and the latest collection from Fendi definitely has us talking. The Milanese brand is known for being traditionally very Italian with special attention to tailoring, opulent use of furs, and that feminine touch. However, this year we are definitely seeing a side of Fendi that is, shall we say, a bit more "mad scientist-ish." 

Inspired by a Nobel Prize winning, Italian neurologist by the name of Rita Levi-Montalcini, Miss Silvia and Mr.Lagerfeld chose to create a collection with an academic and boyish flare to it. While some of the looks certainly convey the idea of this scientific woman with a taste for luxury, some looks in the show seem to say "I got dressed in the dark and threw on the first pair of shoes I could find." Also, the hair- while fun- represents what could only be the result of a fight with the blow dryer. But, we do need to give it to the fashion house for delivering beautiful, contemporary silhouettes and incredible patterns. Perhaps different styling would make a difference. What do you think? Heirlooms In The Making: Williams Handmade

Tommy Hilfiger: Spring 2012

Tommy Hilfiger will forever be the pioneer in American menswear. He is the definitive representative of classic Americana prep. With that being said, Spring 2012 is a collection sample like we’ve never seen from Hilfiger. Think militarized prep without the ruggedness. Hilfiger presents extravagant colors of polychromatic camouflage while maintaining his intrinsic prep motif. The camouflage print is on outerwear, blazers, shirts, shorts, and even shoes. It’s a very bold and risky move from the normally conservative Hilfiger, but it’s a gamble that paid off. With the creative support of emerging mastermind Simon Spurr, Tommy Hilfiger’s Spring 2012 collection sends a message; the American prep originator is still fashion-forward and forward thinking.

No Press Is Bad Press? Tom Ford's Leaked Model Board from LFW

Even though Tom Ford shut down all social media pathways when showing his Spring 2012 collection at London Fashion Week, it’s not surprising in the least that the images of the clothes in some form still managed to make their way through the social networks. After all, the inter-beast is an all consuming organism that even a super human like Tom Ford can’t conquer - or can he? The semi-blurry camera phone photo of what is assumed to be the LFW model board meets the description of his collection and is filled with faces familiar to the runway de Ford. Reportedly leaked from Candice Swanepoel’s Twitter feed, this photo has left no traces on Twitter but is now making the rounds elsewhere on the web such as The Fashion Spot and NY Mag’s The Cut.

The leaked photo, which contains images of peasant blouses and belts that Guardian writer Jess Cartner-Morley said ‘fell a little flat’ and ‘seemed like a Guilty Pleasures version of Tom Ford.’ But if you think about it, the leaked snapshot could play heavily to Ford’s favor, regardless of his intentions. Much like a naked photo of a celebrity, it almost doesn’t matter what said celeb looks like when undressed.  What is important however, is that people got to see something that they weren’t supposed to, which will always have its advantages. If the collection is dull, at least there’s something else to talk about and if the collection is spectacular, then here’s a little more hype to wrap around it. Let’s hope for Ford’s sake (and ours) that this leak is an example of the latter.

Christopher Bailey Brings Bold Prints to Burberry Prorsum '12

Christopher Bailey's designs for Burberry Prorsum Spring 2012 really stepped it up this season to wow the crowds -- bringing together beatnik designs, vibrant summer sunset colors, and structured designs. What really brought together all of the looks was the devil in the details that were meticulously executed; everything from crochet work to beading and even carving. The whole line brought together tribal colors and prints with the English sensibilities that have won the fashion industry decade after decade.

The most interesting development this season is the overwhelming placement of parkas as opposed to the classic Burberry trench, which was very modern in both it's silhouette as well as it's pairings in the look. All in all Bailey seems to have brought together the best of all trends this season, as well as the classics we've come to expect.

Sass & Bide's Sassy Cornrows

From the wacky creations at Vivienne Westwood to the rich, deep hues at Burberry Prorsum, audiences have definitely been given a major fashion treat at this years London Fashion Week. Designers have seriously but put on one hell of a show with collections that are nothing short of genius. Yet, it is not just the clothing that we have had our eyes on but also the hair; specifically the...well... "unique" style at the Sass & Bide show last Friday. 

Whether or not you're a fan of the whole "business in the front, party in the back" mentality, the sleek bun/cornrow look at the show was undoubtedly innovative. The do' meshed perfectly with the eccentricity of the collection. It also, was clean and modern which allowed it to not distract from the individual pieces- which has certainly been an issue for designers this past season. And hey, you gotta hand it to those models for donning such a painful hairstyle with ease.

However, creative appreciation aside, we are praying that we don't see this style on the streets anytime soon.

First Look at J Brand & Christopher Kane's 2012 Collab!

After last year's collaboration for the 5x5 project between Christopher Kane and J Brand, it comes as no shock to most of the fashion industry that another collaboration was on the horizon. The newest project between this duo has come alive as a line of denim for Kane's 2012 Resort collection.

Kane and J Brand recently released the first images of the collection, which takes this year's denim trends and mixes it with Kane's signature neon colors. The line features everything from jean jackets, to flared jeans, and back to close cut capris. Prices start around $300, and the designer hopes for not only another collaboration, but a long term partnership between the two brands.

Romeo & Juliet Brings Gossip Girl To Your Closet

Among all the hubbub of NYFW, a new clothing line in the making has been announced between brand Romeo & Juliet and the CW's Gossip Girl.

According to sources, the line will feature lots of embellished tops, novelty dresses, leather, prints, and more. If you could imagine it on one of the characters from the show, you can now imagine it in your closet! The line will be sold through higher end retails like Saks and Neiman Marcus as well as at mid-range stores like Kitson. Prices will range anywhere between $80-200. Rumor also has it that the line will eventually expand, shortly after it's initial debut, to include handbags and accessories.

However, here is the real question: is this collaboration a bit passed it's prime window of opportunity? The show was down 22% in ratings this year during sweeps month alone, and averages a decrease in 28%. Only time will tell; perhaps this is just the boost those Upper Eastsiders need.

Ugg Australia: You've Come A Long Way.

Believe it or not, the photo above is Ugg Australia's new Ugg Collection boots. What? We know! Ugg has most certainly come a long way since these.

The Ugg Collection includes a new line of high end designer boots and handbags. Think price ranges $500+ for boots, and $700+ for handbags. It seems weird for Ugg to be known for their designer good looks. Most people only know Uggs as the functional, uber warm sheepskin snow boot type.

Nothing wrong with making a new name for yourself. Though the idea of spending $700 on a pair of Uggs is a bit mind boggling. Your thoughts?

Makeup to Unleash Your Inner Sex Kitten

It's time to ditch your typical makeup routine and try on something a little more playful. This fall is all about the swingin' sixties and this sex kitten inspired look (featured in Muse Magazine's AW issue) is the purrfect beauty inspiration for this season.

While we all may not be Toni Garrn (pictured above), this is a look that any lady can achieve; with the right tools and colors of course.

For that plumped up pout, try on MAC's Saint Germain shade, and be sure to use a liner in a similar hue to define your shape and enhance fullness. Using the right shade of shadow to fill in and extend your brows is key. Be sure to choose one shade lighter than the color of your brows and use a matte shadow to just under the apex of the brow to amp up your arch. We recommend MAC's Blanc Type. The eyes are the most important part of this look as they are the most dramatic aspect. Choose a pigment for the base that is has a subtle shimmer and is neutral. Try MAC's Dazzlelight. Then apply a deep, coco brown (MAC's Espresso) along the crease of your eye, making the outer corners darkest. This will create luxurious velvet effect. Then, using the same brown, carefully trace the top of your lash line adding a subtle flick of extra color at the end to create the "cat effect." Lastly, finish the look with a matte face powder and a muted bronzer along your cheek bones and temples.

Voila! Instant bombshell!

Add Some Hue To Your Do'!

Looking for something totally rad to spice up your lack luster locks? Well, even though fall is just beginning that doesn't mean you shouldn't be pulling inspiration from the recent SS'12 shows of the past few weeks. Personally, we are absolutely in love with the pumpkin tinted, peek-a-boo highlighted bangs seen on some of the models at the Peter Som show.

This is the perfect color to splash into your locks if your fair haired. It is dramatic enough to stand out but won't look like a bad teeny-bopper dye job from 7th grade. Not to mention, that this tangerine based hue is the perfect way to add warmth and allure to any complexion.

Oh, and don't worry brunettes. We didn't forget about you! While the tangy color may not be the best choice for you, test driving that ultra deep side-part, seen on all of Peter's glamazons, is an absolute must!

Short And Sweet: 10 Crosby Derek Lam

If there was one show this season to prove that quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality, it would be the Spring 2012 collection by 10 Crosby Derek Lam. With an astute awareness of the ephemeral nature of the spring season, Derek Lam focused the collection around key wearable and transitional pieces that were workplace ready. This practical approach brought together simple and bold graphic stripes, florals and bright colors. Key trend colors were present in the collection but in a seamless, well balanced way that only enhanced what was already being done with the designs. Contrasting stripes looked efficient and energetic and the materials were durable (some even machine washable) yet, appeared expensive. The overall look was refreshing – an appropriate attitude for a spring collection, which is part of what makes the pieces so wearable.


A stand out look was the ‘new suit’, which featured a swingy box cut burlap jacket and matching tailored short skirt. Perhaps the key to Derek Lam’s success was focusing on what he thought women would love to have in their wardrobe as opposed to a seasonal dogmatic criterion. Giving just as much as need be given, the collection has found the right balance between composed complexity and crisp and causal simplicity.

Marc by Marc Jacobs....the End of an Era?

You absolutely cannot talk about NYFW without anticipating the Marc by Marc Jacobs show with baited breath; and especially this year with the rumors swirling about Marc Jacobs heading to Dior, that were recently confirmed, this year was even more poignant.

This season, minus all the distraction, against a plain white background, Jacobs was one of the only designers to show a sea of solids as opposed to the myriad of prints that we've been seeing. Sticking namely with reds, blues, and whites, the line was very minimalistic and loose fitting. Jacobs kept the whimsy of the line by featuring colorful sneakers, visors, and keeping the sporty, fun theme we are used to.

However, from the free flying anoraks to the tailored jackets everything seemed a bit....muted compared to what the designer normally produces. Even reports from guests at the show seem generally underwhelmed at the presentation and the reception by the designer. Will this new era starting at Dior take away from the Marc by Marc Jacobs line that has gathered such a following?

Island Brights: A Wise Wardrobe Investment

Arak, Rag & Bone, Vivenne Tam, Creatures Of The Wind

Now there is one more reason to fully embrace this fall’s bedrock of brights. As the onpour of New York Fashion Week (SS '12) shows slows to a drizzle, we are left with a finely tuned rainbow of fresh bright colors to plan our future palettes around. So if you’re worried that the tangerine leather skirt you’ve been eyeing is an impulse splurge that won’t last beyond the next season, fret no more. Second cousins to the colors of the coming season, several of this fall’s colors will be as hot as the weather 8 months from now.

Truth be told, the era of throw away fashion may have already had its moment, and the return to a curated, more workable wardrobe is upon us.

 Spring’s colors may seem bold, but they can actually be worked seamlessly into an already existing wardrobe. Uplift your basic neutrals by mixing in a few key colors or brighten up your look by pairing them together for a surprisingly wearable color-blocked effect. Either way, the longevity of the coming color burst proves incorporating a few brilliant new pieces to be a worthy investment. Great colors to choose from are sunshine yellows, sea greens, bright blues and all shades of pink and orange reds.

Chris Benz's Wild Hair for SS'12

Einstein chic or Marilyn Monroe gone mad? Any which way you look at the hair from the Chris Benz preview show, you can't deny that there is a small part of you that is dying to chop off your locks and backcomb the heck out of your do'.

This is the ultimate "go to" style if you wanna change up the "Plain Jane" factor of the the usual t-shirt and jeans uniform. Also, throw with some killer shades, (think the ones pictured above) and dangerously high patent pumps, and you're sure to be the baddest bitch on the block!

Got a long mane? No need to fret! With a few bobby pins and a little hairspray magic, you can achieve the faux-bob version in a matter of minutes. Also, keep in mind that it's okay if it is not polished. The whole point is to look "perfectly undone."

CAUTION: But be sure to keep your makeup clean and fresh. You don't want people thinking you're trying to emulate the late Heath Ledger as The Joker in Dark Knight. Yikes!

Model Watch Monday: Latvian Born Gints Linbergs

Making his move on the male modeling scene is Gints Linberg, hailing from Latvia. Gints was scouted while working at a retail store in Amsterdam. He's got everything that a successful male model needs to make it across the varied ranges of each market. He's got intense brown eyes, defined jawline, a wide mouth and a brow that only intensifies his already smoldering look. He doesn't have those boyish looks; he's got the looks to take on the men’s realm. This is what we call lasting power and depth. This is what's needed to hold strong in the modeling industry, to sustain that long career, and he's got it!

Gints is currently signed with A Men Amsterdam and Slight Management Barcelona.

Fall Trend Alert: Bright Pants

East coasters tend to live in black the minute the temp falls below 60 degrees. Fall comes and goes quicker than you'd like, and then we're left with 3 long months of harsh winter. Pants are the only thing visible once you've zipped up your knee-length coat and laced up your snow boots.

Want to stand out in a sea of black? Bring some color to your corduroys. Or your tights, wool pants, or jeans, for that matter. Just get some color on those legs!

Think jewel tones: red, royal blue, mustard yellow, or emerald. Save the pastels for spring and keep the rest of your outfit simple. Try bright pants with a neutral khaki or black sweater. For a night out, pair them with something (anything!) leopard print. Then wave at your entourage as they worship you for brightening up their winter. Ok, maybe not. But at least you look good.

Alexander Wang...Spring's Fashion Golden Boy

For the past few seasons the jewel of the ball has been clear; Alexander Wang. The designer debuted a street style collection this season that definitely drew inspiration from BMX and Motocross along with an incredible array of motifs. In seamless transitions, the show moved from bright meshes to floral cargo jumpsuits and then onto botanical prints in race car silhouettes. Accessorizing the pieces, were retro white and grey pointy-toed pumps as well as cross body bags.

Next up on the phenom's schedule? A beauty collaboration of course. A limited-edition line will be featured with Sally Hansen nail-polish that can be purchased this spring. The colors will stick with the grunge affect that has become Wang's signature: Parchment (the nude featured on the runway), Petrol, and Oxblood.

The only one who could out do him in the spot light this week? His nearly two year old niece, decked out in full Wang gear. Speculation about a kid's line from the designer are flying about, which he all but confirmed previous to the show. Check out the trendy toddler below and then the rest of Wang's collections. Jason Wu Plays a Little Rough Around The Edges For Spring 2012

It's not hard to be jealous during NY Fashion Week. Twitter alone is enough to send anyone into a furry of jealousy for all the great runway shows, presentations, and parties that are going on. Among the many, one of the designers who has clearly stood out with the amount of buzz and praise they are generating...Jason Wu.

The designer, known for red carpet looks and being favored by Michelle Obama, has pushed the envelope this season and tried his hand at an edgier look. Collaborating with graffiti artist KAWS on the print that dominated the show, Wu smudged the edges on his normally prim and proper look (although still without actually making anything "street wear"). It can't really be said that he completely embraced the idea of street, but the difference that can be seen is in the embellishments and colors that he chose: out with the rococo and in with the rudimentary beads, innovating with Nylon but keeping the immensely popular heather grey from last season.

The Ladies Behind “Juicy” Launch a New Line

Best friends and fashion mavens, Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, have taken the fashion world by storm with clothes that boast a pretty princess aesthetic. The team single-handedly revolutionized the concept of lounge wear, making casual pieces that are glamorous and feminine for the decidedly fashionable.

What started with plush velour track suits with the word “Juicy” drawn across the rear, has evolved into Juicy Couture, a $600 million dollar fashion empire. Since selling the brand to Liz Claiborne in 2003, it is now time for round two, with the launch of a new line. After completing an 18-month non-compete agreement, the co-creative directors of Juicy Couture, are moving onto their next design project. The newest design venture is described as "California-eccentric."

The designing duo is starting from scratch with Skaist-Taylor. Taking their design concept of confident and flirty imagery, the collection will feature a complete line of outerwear, tailored pants, knits tops, and t-shirts.

The high premium collection will make its debut at New York Fashion Week in February, and will be available in stores for Fall 2012.

Cleopatra's Got Nothing On Dior's Velvet Eyes

Lacking a steady hand? Not a problem, Dior's got you covered with their latest beauty invention; Dior Velvet Eyes, adhesive eyeliner. Long gone are the days of spending hours in front of the mirror trying to get that winged eyeliner to match up with the other eye and the fear of smudging your makeup? Vanished!

The ready-to-wear beauty trick comes in a set of four luxurious, velvet finished styles, two of which are bedazzled with Swarovski crystals; suck on that Cleopatra! What is really fantastic about these bad boys is that they are totally reusable-with the proper maintenance-which makes the $60 price tag reasonable. 

The fierce decals are set to make their debut tonight at Dior's New York boutique for Fashion's Night Out and will be sold exclusively at Sephora.

Alexis Bittar Resort 2012 Look Book Is Literally Out Of This World

It seems as though every form of fashion manifestation has taken on a few more dimensions. From fashion videos to runways walked by holograms, the dry cut methods for how to present a new collection are changing at breakneck speed. This is, quite obviously, an advantage for indie brands that might not have the funds to throw down on a double page, glossy spread in French Vogue. It’s also an opportunity for the high end fashion houses to easily target and appeal to a younger crowd of fashion avant-gardes.

With all the media savvy options of presentation available, it makes sense that this would also give a leg up to the accessory subgenre of the fashion world. In the past, accessory lookbooks haven’t exactly revved up the buzz that a fashion lookbook might, but that’s all about to change. Jewelry brand Alexis Bittar’s new lookbook is just what you'd come to expect from this avenue of product presentation – if it were juiced up on Acid, growth hormones, and a dash of the ultimate 80’s party cocktail, that is.

 A staggering 40 pages, the lookbook is a collage of bald headed mannequins with Fellini-like graphics that feature everything from animals, dollar bill t-shirt origami, sunnyside eggs, melting mouths, cars and planes - and oh right, the moon! The jewelry itself is also out of this world, making for a slow, gluttonous look through and an uncontrollable urge to burn last month's paycheck on a pair of earrings.

Hang On To Your Whites

Labor Day has officially passed but there’s no need for you to push your whites to the back of your closet. As you may remember us mentioning, white dresses are on trend for Resort 2012 – but that’s not the only way you can give your whites a wear. Get a fresh look that’s a crisp as the Autumn nights in your not too distant future by indulging in tuxedo inspired separates.

As demonstrated on the runways of Fall 2011, desaturated brights have the ability to bring out pristine tailoring like no other and a bit of borrowing from the boys can’t hurt either. Designers such as Prabal Gurung, Ralph Lauren, Jason Wu and Yves Saint Laurent set the achromatic tone, blending feminine details such as high ruffled necks, flowing fabrics and skinny ties with subtle multi textured layers. The most successful looks are those that contain something strong to offset delicate features. Another fresh look to note is the pairing of white and off white, creating new rules where the old have been broken and bringing new life to the classic black and white.

The Bride Wore....Sneakers?

While we may not understand it, apparently not everyone in the world goes for fashion over function; some people actually prefer to walk in their shoes (go figure!). Now, brides ready to skip down the aisle literally can! Vouelle, a footwear company started in Paris by a pair of Americans, not only has several bridal and otherwise collections in the worse, but has also premiered a pair of....wait for it...bridal sneakers!

Yes, you read correctly.

The company collaborated with Twins for Peace, a socially responsible shoe brand, which went on sale this spring. The shoes have been met with surprising success and are favored by atypical brides who are looking for a second pair of shoes to wear both before and after the ceremony. The average price of shoes from the line is $485 and the line is is talks with other bridal designers to expand the line even farther. Bridal sweats maybe? More likely, accessories and bags.

Upgrade Your Smelly Gym Bag

Nothing downgrades a stellar work ensemble than a tattered sports insignia duffle bag wrapped around your shoulder. Well, that and flip flops. Throwing a gym bag into your car and retrieving it for a mere walk into the gym is one thing. But for city dwellers, the gym bag becomes part of your outfit as you carry it about your daily commute. If you're wondering whether your red Adidas striped bag looks good with your new John Varvatos 3-piece suit, it doesn't.

What qualifies as a quality gym bag?

1. It doesn't look like a gym bag. It looks like a dapper businessman's carry-on.

2. It's made out of a sturdy waxed canvas or leather. Like most men, these finishes get better with age.

3. It will hold a pair of sneakers and a change of clothes. We're not moving INTO the gym.

4. Unless you like to live right on the edge and use the gym's provided toiletries, it should also have an extra compartment for your shaving accoutrement and potions.

5. This bag will rest on a multitude of begrimed surfaces including a subway platform, locker room floor, and a dug-out. A light colored bag will serve as your enemy. Go with classic black, rusty brown, or even a dark shade of forest green.

Model Watch Monday: Amanda Smith

It's been crunch time for this Ginger Snap, who has been working every single day since she signed with Photogenics. This might be a surprise because she only stands 5'8", slightly under the ideal model height. However, with rad freckles and long red hair there was a spot for her. Amanda has already been lensed by notable photographers like Michel Compte and LA's Tony Duran. Native Californian, which proves that Cali girls have got it all, and I'm not just saying that because I am one too. ;) Keep her on the radar, she's going places.

Helmut Lang Returns To Fashion Week

The reinvigorated edgy but feminine style of Helmut Lang is returning to the runway after a transitory hiatus. New York Fashion Week will be the label's first fashion show since its relaunch in 2007. The show will be produced by creative directors Michael and Nicole Colovos, former recipients of the prestigious CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund and co-founders of denim line Habitual. The husband and wife duo assumed creative control of Helmut Lang in 2006 after Theory acquired the label from Prada and its legendary namesake departed from his creative role.

As Helmut Lang prepares to reemerge with its upcoming runway presentation, the fashion world waits with baited breathe for the brand’s famed dressed-down luxury, modern structures, and minimalist detailing. Nicole and Michael Colovos can be trusted to deliver the original aesthetic that Mr. Lang’s loyalists have been accustomed to, while infusing their own creative vision. The collection continues to boast supreme design integrity with a more utilitarian and raw edge to its pieces.

During Fashion’s Night Out on September 8th, Helmut Lang will have a photo booth set up at its Soho store. Photos taken in the booth will be available online to download onto Facebook or Tumblr. The upcoming runway show on Saturday, September 10th, will also be live streamed on the label’s new Website where an e-commerce page will launch this month.

The weather is starting to change and with every cloudy day -and the kiddies off to school- we are one step closer to fall. It's now the perfect time for a fall fashion round up to make sure you're updated and ready to go, but before you hit the mall check out our little cheat-sheet of all the trends you won't want to miss out on:

Polka Dots - Gracing almost every runway including Marc Jacobs, the retro print seems to be back in a big way. Luckily, the print is also very easy to come by since it works well for so many silhouettes. Everything from jackets to skirts to tights and back! Just make sure to keep the fabric light so the print gets to speak for itself.

Animal Print - An oldie but a goodie has found it's second breath this season. Featured in every magazine, like it's the second coming, Leopard is a print that never goes out of style. Whether it's a pop of print for effect or the full shabang, find a way to get it into your closet this season!

Color Blocking - Perhaps the hottest trend of them all, color blocking is rearing it's funky head in a major way this season. To keep it fresh choose separate, solid colored pieces that, together, create the effect, instead of single garments that may be passe in a few months.

Maxi - Go big or go home! The floor sweeping silhouettes aren't going anywhere for the foreseeable future. With the right proportions and accessories, this trend can work for any height and body type!

Suiting - Like many of the retro trends on the rise, female suiting is heading back with strong lines that are still kept ladylike and en pointe. Sets allow you to pair together, but also to play with other individual pieces which will keep the investment current for many seasons to come!

Yes, everyone...TEETH TATTOOS! A few months back, it was all about adding some pattern to your kisser but now decorating your fangs is all the rage. Japanese girls have been spotted sporting this unusual trend (which is applied with glue and lasts for several days) and wear designs that match their nails! Though strange (really, really strange) you have to admit it is definitely creative. I mean, come on, haven't you always dreamed about flashing that cute guy you like a big smile while also showing him how much you love ladybugs? But, on the other hand, you also have to ask yourself if someone may mistake your tooth art for food. Well, we will all just have to watch and see if this will be something that will actually catch on or if it will just be reserved for those fearless fashionistas in Japan. What do you think?

Fall’s Must Have Style: A Draped Cape

With the change in seasons, statement outerwear is about looking effortlessly sleek and polished. For a dramatic and versatile look this fall, drape a cape over your shoulders. Fashionable enough to make a style statement, but functional enough to keep you warm, a tasteful cover-up is the perfect piece for the transition from warm to cold weather.

There are cape styles to suit every personality. Full length capes provide drama and lends to a commanding night look. A structured wool cape can top off a blouse, skirt, tights, and ankle booties. Shorter capes known as “capelets” or a draped shawl compliment cocktail dresses and are full of movement and personality.

A well constructed cape can flatter any body type. Perfectly paired with flared trousers or a little black dress, a cape is a refined and easy style choice that goes from day to night with no adjustments required. To avoid getting your shape lost in the folds of the fabric, a belted style will bring the cape in at the waist, for a favorable hourglass silhouette. Emphasize the shape of the cape by wearing slim fitted pants or a pencil skirt.

One More Pair To Add To Your Fall Collection: Flatforms

Sky high platforms and wedges are easy to find these days. In fact, it’s nearly a requirement for a true fashionista to incorporate at least 2 – 3 pairs into the revolving staples of her uniform. So what happens if the practicalities of your daily life simply don’t allow for you to ascend to new heights? Or what if you are over 5 ‘10” and simply don’t feel like tossing on an extra 5 to 6 inches to tower above, well, basically everyone?

For the girls that who love the look of the towering platforms but have a fear of heights, there is a compromise that has been around for a while now, but is still certainly worth a mention. The leg lengthening ‘flatform’ gives you a few extra inches while keeping your toes on an even playing field with your heel. Basically, you get to wear platforms without throwing off your center of balance. With just an inch or two of heel at the most, it’s sort of like faking high heels – and let’s be honest now, what girl wouldn’t want a day off from arched soles here or there, if she could still achieve the same look?
