It's Time to Update the Spring Closet

With the weather warming up all over the country, it is safe to say that spring is finally here! That also means that it is time to turn over the closet and check out the latest spring and summer trends. Here is a rundown of some of the trends to keep an eye out for.

The first major trend that we are seeing is color! Pants are really making this trend. They are available in any color, from dark or light neon, to pastels, to even patterns!

The second big trend we are seeing is the twenties. This could result from some major movies that are set to be released in the next couple of months, especially The Great Gatsby. Major designers like Ralph Lauren are onto this trend, which includes fringed skirts, pleats, and heavily beaded dresses.

Another trend is longer hem lines. In the past, we have seen miniskirts make a huge comeback, but this season is all about being modest and conservative. This year, we have seen leather make a statement in every season, and it will continue to do so. I think it is a great combination to wear leather for spring, as well as another obvious trend: florals. We have seen designers such as Hermes and Celine use this trend in their spring collections.

There are some trends that are also running over from past seasons, so remember to keep them in your closet. We are still seeing plenty of lace, especially on the backs of shirts. The last trend we have spotted is the wide leg trouser, rather than the skinny cut pant.

In the accessories and beauty category, we are seeing many trends, as well.  There are plenty of chunky, colorful jewelry this season, and there are purses in the style of doctors' bags, which are larger and boxy at the bottom. For hair, we have seen a change from pin-straight styles to some bounce. Whether it is natural curls or blow-out hair, there is some movement in hair for spring. The chignon is also continuing through the spring, as well as the french twist updo.

V.S. PINK Launches Full MLB Collection

Earlier this week, Victoria’s Secret made a lot of baseball fans happy, as the company expanded the number of teams available in its Pink Major League Baseball collection to include all 30 teams. Leading the newly added teams are the Marlins, followed by the Braves, Blue Jays, Royals, Reds, Astros, and Pirates.

Now, female fans all over the United States can wear their favorite team’s tees, shorts, hats, hoodies, bags, and sweats to the ballpark, while still looking fashionable. Even team undies are available.

We have a strong feeling that the celebrity girlfriends of Major League Baseball players, like Jamie Edmondson, Torrie Wilson, Shannon James, Rima Fakih, and Brittany Binger, will all love the collection. Launched originally in 2010, the Victoria’s Secret and MLB collaboration is now available at 450 stores, including MLB stadium stores and online at the Victoria's Secret and MLB websites.

Tommy Hilfiger Joins ‘American Idol’

Legendary designer Tommy Hilfiger has joined the “American Idol” family as an image adviser to the show’s finalists.

“I admire risk takers who share my belief in the power of fashion to transform and influence, and I look forward to working with the artists to guide them in defining their performance style and identity,” Hilfiger said in a press release.

For Tommy Hilfiger fans, this new position may not come as much of a surprise, considering his connections with musicians in the past. Hilfiger has worked with well-known artists like Britney Spears, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and The Rolling Stones.

We cannot wait to see what Hilfiger comes up with for each finalist. If you are someone who stopped watching “Idol” a few cycles back, this may give you a reason to begin watching the show again.

Fun, Freedom, and Fashion at BET’s ‘Rip the Runway’

BET’s eighth annual fashion show, “Rip the Runway,” has been taped and will premiere on March 21. Hosted by supermodel Selita Ebanks and actor Pooch Hall, this year’s show will feature up-and-coming designers like Samantha Black, Tannielle White, Monif C, and LaQuan Smith, as well as the debut of Ebanks’ swimwear line, Sass by Selita.

In addition to the models that will grace the runway, quite a few musical guests will make an appearance. Robin Thicke, B.o.B., Lil’ Kim, Estelle, Wale, Meek Mill, Diggy Simmons, and Jeremih will all perform at the special show.

“Fun, Freedom and Fashion” is the theme of this year’s show, and we doubt that “Rip The Runway” will lack any of the three. Produced by Cossette Productions, which has produced the Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards, BET's fashion show sounds like something you will not want to miss.

Watch Out for Kate Spade

If there’s one thing that handbag queen Kate Spade is good at, it is pops of color/ (Okay, and polka dots.) So it comes as no surprise that the designer’s first-ever line of watches is full of brights, like the canary yellow and hot pink Carousel bangles pictured above, which are also available in turquoise. Even some of the standard gold and silver pieces have soft pink accents, like the rosy-hued minute hand on both the gold and silver Gramercy Grand watches. But for us, the standout is certainly the bangle watches, which come with cute phrases engraved inside, just like Kate Spade’s adorable idiom bangles. The only thing we love more than the graphic black-and-cream design of the Delacorte bangle is the cheeky “When in Rome” inscription.

Are you sensing a geographical pattern to these names, which include Gramercy Hotel and Delacorte Theater? Kate Spade’s collection is inspired by New York City, so each design takes its name from a local landmark, including a Metro Strap watch. Perhaps, every watch should be inscribed with “New York minute.”

Watchmakers Turn Focus on women

Wearing a watch has been a trend in men's fashion for many years. But this year, watchmakers are turning their focus on women. The Swiss are working on a line of mechanical watches for women, and it is projected to become a more lucrative business than luxury men's watches. Tag Heuer, Chanel, and La Montre Hermes all predict that adding women's lines will increase sales by about 30 percent.

The designers believe that women will like the mechanical aspect of the watches, as a result of the increased level of craftsmanship, as opposed to electric ones. Another reason that watch sales will rise is that they will make a great gift for women. Designers are also using a wide variety of materials to make these watches. The high-end watches will continue to consist of gold and diamonds, but designers have also begun to make watches with enamel, mother of pearl, and even feathers.

Looks by Larissa: Jean Jacket

Today, I decided to show off my Levi’s vintage jean jacket. Levi’s vintage pieces are always timeless, and they can enhance an outfit without fail. This jacket is designed for men, and I love it because it’s large enough to wear layers underneath if it is cold, and I feel as if I’m wearing my boyfriend's jacket. There is just something so romantic about that concept.

My shirt is an old L.L. Bean button up, straight from my grandmother’s closet. The red and white stripes with the dark blue acid wash of the jacket creates an amazing juxtaposition. The jeans are jeggings, because I had yet to try out this pair. They look like jeans, but they have the comfort of leggings, which I love! The shoes are lace-ups from Urban Outfitters. These shoes have such a clean design, and my favorite part is the slight point at the end. Overall, I think this look is super chic.

Jewelry Dunn Right

Some may believe wearing skulls is gothic and scary, but we think otherwise. When sporting pieces from the Jewels By Dunn collection, you don’t have to be gothic and scary; you can be colorful, trendy, and bright.

The Jewels By Dunn collection is made up of various bracelets and necklaces, designed with beautiful beads and stones. Each of the different designs presented in the collection bring something unique to the table. You can purchase pieces from the collection on the Jewels By Dunn website. Since each design contains just about every color, you can wear them everyday with all of your different outfits. You can dress them up or dress them down, and no matter what, you’ll end up getting a compliment. The Jewels By Dunn collection is definitely affordable and fitting for everyone.

Rainy Day Chic

Let’s face it: Rainy days are not the best look for fashion. With April showers just around the corner, there’s no better way to beat the rain than with a pair of Hunter rain boots.

Rain boots have never been considered the most stylish shoe, but Hunter boots completely revolutionized the rain boot by making them both stylish and trendy. They can be found on the pages of Vogue and on the feet of many celebrities and fashionistas.

So, what is it about these rainy day favorites that make them so special? They’re comfortable, practical, and fun, since they are offered in an assortment of great colors.

There’s nothing worse than running around soaking wet all day, so brighten up a rainy day with a pair of colored Hunter boots.

Wear with a fun pair of knee-high socks and skinny jeans, and you’ll actually be wishing for rainy days!

While you may be thinking that it’s a bit much to spend on rubber boots, the cozy factor and the versatility of the footwear will definitely change your mind.

Bring on the rain!

Philip Lim Reinvents the Loafer

The loafer happens to be the one shoe that has been brought back to life at the change of each season. Whether it is the penny loafer or the oxford-style loafer, these shoes just never seem to fade into the background of the grand fashion closet. So, Philip Lim acted on sheer whim when it came to dressing up the transitional loafer again. Lim took the loafer to new heights for his spring 2012 shoe collection. No, the loafer doesn't have a heel yet; it's a playful wedge that's perfect for errands and nautical strolls.

His brown, reptile-pattern loafer with its pristine wedge is fabulous for this time of the year, while Lim’s black leather, wedge loafer is a no-brainer for any season. If you're yearning for a studious look, but you don't want to sacrifice the height, Lim’s loafer-wedge concoction is just right.

If the Shoe Fits, Buy It

Who says that women have to corner the market when it comes to shoes? True, it is typically the women who have closets and rooms dedicated to shoes. However, it is not that uncommon for a man to have his fair share of footwear. Men shouldn’t let a guy who has one pair of shoes that he thinks goes with everything dictate what men’s shoes should look like. Contrary to popular belief, that pair of Converse you’ve been wearing for way too long is not stylish, or any other redeeming adjective you can think of; in fact, it’s the opposite. It gives off the perception that you don’t care what you look like.

But there's no need to worry, because there are various alternatives. If you’re dead set on shoes like Converse, try to diversify. A pair of classic Chuck Taylors go well with casual jeans and T-shirt, but that look can get reductive. Try a pair of Tom's cordones. They have a similar look, but there’s a bit of a difference. Plus, buying Tom's supports a good cause, and who doesn’t want to feel warm and fuzzy when they are buying shoes?

So, the moral of this story is: Buy more shoes. Tons of them. We promise that you won’t hate yourself for it. Just step out of that comfort zone and try something new. Start small with Tom's, and then if you’re feeling especially daring, move up to wingtips. Heck, even Nike sells unconventional shoes you can try. If you branch out, then you will not regret it. You, too, can have a room dedicated to shoes.

Agyness Deyn Teams Up With Dr. Martens Footwear

After starring in two of the British brand’s campaigns, model Agyness Deyn will collaborate with Dr. Martens for a 2012 limited edition collection. Deyn, who's known for her androgynous appeal, bought her first pair of Docs in her early teen years. This is not Deyn’s first collaboration, as she has also designed a line of shirts for Uniqlo.

“This brand is a great fit for me, as it stands for strong character and being able to shape your own personal identity,” she told WWD.

Dr. Martens have maintained their appeal since they became a staple of nineties fashion. We’re excited to see what kinds of designs Agyness Deyn will launch with the brand. The line is supposed to launch in time for fall 2012, and it will be available worldwide.

Ciaté Paint Pots Come to Sephora

With brands like Boots No. 7 and Simple Skincare arriving in the United States over the past few years, it seems only natural that English imports continue to fill the shelves of beauty departments nationwide. The latest products to make the trip to the states are Ciaté paint pots.

The name "paint pots" does not refer to the highly pigmented eye shadows from MAC Cosmetics. In this case, the paint pots are actually nail polishes. The Ciaté brand was born in London and created by nail expert Charlotte Knight. The nail colors are beautifully packaged in unique, rectangular bottles tied with bows.

Cute packaging aside, these polishes are free of formaldehyde, toluene, camphor, and other harmful ingredients which are commonly found in popular high-end brands like OPI and China Glaze. The gorgeous color range includes shades like Mistress, a vivid, creamy red, and Confetti, a clear polish filled with a fun mix of rainbow glitter.

Until now, these polishes were only available online for those in the U.S., but exchange rates and shipping made them even more pricey. Ciaté has recently partnered with Sephora, which will begin selling the polishes this month. The nail colors retail for $15 each, and they will also be sold on Sephora's website.

Looks by Larissa: Gray and Yellow

This Sunday, I woke up and decided that I wanted to feel cute and cozy, so I opted for this fun sweater from Sparkle and Fade. The spots of color are what makes this one of my favorite pieces; it is very individual and can be paired perfectly with some dark-wash skinny jeans. I am wearing my favorite Silence and Noise jeans, because they just look good with everything.

Lately, I have been very into ankle boots. These are from Aldo, which is having amazing sales, and I can’t seem to stop buying more boots! They have a slight heel and are extremely basic, but that is what makes them worthwhile. They are great for almost any season, and I can still wear them with a cute summer dresses as the weather gets warmer! This is the perfect ensemble for meeting friends while snuggling up with a cup of coffee.

New International Shoe Site

Calling all shoe lovers: Wouldn't it be great to get access to international brands from all around the world on one site? Well, dreams do come true! A brand new website called Shoescribe.com has just launched.

The site has many cool, unique features. My personal favorite is "Ask Suzie," who is the resident shoe guru. This feature allows you to ask her anything, and then she will help solve your shoe-related problems. Another great aspect of the site is that the shoes range from sneakers to pumps, so there is something for everyone. There is an option to become a VIP member, as well, but it means that you will pay an annual fee to use this site. Benefits of becoming a member include tips on how to keep shoes in top condition, a gift on your birthday, and unlimited free shipping.

In the future, there will be plenty of celebrity guest editors and access to video content. For the span of the site's launch, Oscar-nominated designer Arianne Phillips will be the guest editor. Make sure to check out Shoescribe for the latest in spring 2012 footwear!

Paris Fashion Week's Mother of Pearl Beading

The year of the sequins may be in full swing, but there was another embellishment that we couldn’t keep our eyes off of during fashion week: Pearl beading. Perfect for setting off a delicate design or adding a serious dose of bling to embroidered pieces, this detail dominated several runway shows. Take Balmain’s fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection, which showed during Paris Fashion Week. In addition to the multitude of intricately beaded jackets, suits, and dresses, all of which oozed opulence, model-of-the-moment Karlie Kloss made her usual head-turning appearance in a to-die-for pair of velvet pants dotted in thousands of pearls and crystal. The complex look was casually paired with a cream crew-neck sweater.

Balmain wasn’t the only big name to try out this trend. Valentino added some subtle pearl beading to its folk-inspired collection, and Dolce & Gabbana used it for a characteristically luxurious effect on their dresses. You don't have to wait for this runway must-have to hit retail stores. Snag a sparking pearl bead skirt from Top Shop, available in both yellow and silver, or keep it classy with a darling embellished pearl cardigan or a ladylike bead and faux pearl-embellished crepe top from Miu Miu.

Vera Wang Visits 'The View'

On March 10, superstar designer Vera Wang made an appearance on "The View," and she bought her spring 2012 bridal collection along with her. Whoopi, Joy, Sherri, and Elisabeth all enjoyed the nude-and-black-heavy collection, and they approved of the designer’s bold choice to veer away from traditional white gowns.

Draped in tulled fabrics and a heavy dose of lace, the bridal collection wowed audience members during the show’s weekly “Fashion Friday” segment. Aside from providing commentary on the her bold bridal dresses, the team of co-hosts managed to mix in a few questions, which made for a pretty decent interview.

Marni Meets H&M

The buyers for H&M must be some of the best in the business, because in the past year, they have secured collections from some of the top fashion houses in the world. First they sealed Versace, and now the buyers have struck gold again, because the designers over at Marni released a collection just for H&M a few days ago.

It’s hard to pinpoint one particular trend that this collection has to offer. The main stylistic element is the use of patterns. From circular geometric to horizontal stripes, the patterns in this collection take away the traditional idea of similar pieces making up a cohesive set of looks. Everything looks like it could be a stand-alone item, but there also are one or two sets of looks that are made from the same cloth.

High fashion becomes affordable with this collection, which boasts prices under $100. You have to love getting quality without having to break the bank. The only setback? This collection is only available in a limited number of stores, but don’t worry! There are 26 stores nationwide that have the collection in stock, and if none of those places are near you, then be thankful for the Internet, because H&M’s official website has the collection available online. So, there’s really no excuse to not get your hands on at least one item from this great collection.

Spanx Creator Is the Youngest Self-Made Female Billionaire

If you don't own a pair of Spanx, then girl, I wish I had your body. The shapewear took the fashion world by storm twelve years ago, smoothing away our lumps and bumps. Now its creator, Sara Blakely, is making waves in the financial world.

Blakely was recently inducted into Forbes' billionaire list, but she's not just any billionaire. As it turns out, with Spanx worth an estimated one billion dollars, and Blakely's age clocking in at 41 years, she is the youngest self-made billionaire.

What's even more impressive is that she is the sole owner of the company, which she started with just $5,000 in savings. What's also noteworthy is that Sara Blakely hasn't spent any money on advertising. That's right, word of mouth (especially celebrity word of mouth) is responsible for the shapewear's success, and its results.

Can you even imagine fashion without Spanx?

Get Smooth Hair the Safe Way

Admit it: You're never completely satisfied with your hair, but you aren't sure how you feel about drenching it in chemical styling agents. Brazilian blowouts sound appealing to those with less-than-perfect strands, but since last year, their effects on your health have been downright questionable.  Reports from the USDA expressed concern over the amounts of formaldehyde in these products, leading many salons to stop offering the service.

Despite all the bad news, women still long for salon results without the nasty chemicals or the high price. Hair-care companies heard the demands and delivered a range of options that can be used at home to smooth and soften hair.

Companies like Garnier, Organix, and Living Proof all have products on the market that claim to behave just like a salon keratin treatment. They claim to keep your hair perfectly smooth and frizz free for several days at a time, after just one wash. Is it possible that drugstore or even high-end products can give you the same results that you would get in a salon? Not quite.

These easy, at-home treatments won't change your hair forever, but they will make it softer, significantly less frizzy, and much more manageable while you use them, and that seems to be good enough for most women. For an affordable smoothing solution for your hair without the risk, try Garnier Sleek and Shine blow-dry perfector or Organix Brazilian keratin treatment.

A New Accessories Tory Book

When we mention Tory Burch, you probably start thinking about flats. Suffice it to say that the preppy princess is more or less synonymous with amazing shoes, bags, and scarves, which is exactly why we’re excited that the line has just launched an accessories lookbook online. In typical Tory fashion, the designs don’t shy away from color. The pieces ranged from cheery yellow-and-blue kitten heels and driving shoes to a trendy tangerine crossbody bag and iPad case, which are two things that we’re especially excited about: The rope detailing that was such a smash on last season’s espadrilles was translated into adorable totes and flat sandals. We can’t wait to slip our feet into the menswear-inspired printed loafer, which can be paired perfectly with a flirty, feminine sundress.

In case you can’t envision these accessories in your spring and summer wardrobe, the folks at Tory Burch provided an eye-catching style guide to tempt you to try the new trends. (As if you needed convincing.) That statement shoe you’re not sure you can pull off? Tory has got you covered. Besides, what girl wouldn’t want to get dressed by Tory Burch?

Looks by Larissa: Moschino Boots

Spring is finally in the air. Today the sun was shining and students were soaking up the rays on the grass in every spot of sunlight. On this day, I opted for one of my most favorite pieces: Leggings from H&M with a suede detail. These unique leggings can take any outfit to the next level. I have received countless compliments whenever I wear them.

I am also wearing Moschino vintage ankle boots, which are one of my most recent purchases. These leather boots were beautifully made in Italy, and I am in love with them! On top, I am wearing a basic white T-shirt with a vintage, light blue jean vest, I picked the vest up on the streets of Mexico in a tiny little vintage shop for only $1.50. It's super lightweight and simple, and I can pair it with almost any top on warm days.

Paris Fashion Week Recap

With all of the different shows during Fashion Week, it is hard to keep the top trends in order. So, here is a breakdown of Paris Fashion Week, as well as the trends that we will see in the fall as a result of the shows.

One of the top trends was the use of feathers. Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, and Zuhair Murad all incorporated feathers into their pieces and featured them in multiple ways. McQueen used them as the main material for some looks, while Murad used the feathers to add decoration to his cocktail dresses.

The color green also made a large appearance throughout the week. In the Kenzo, Hermes, and Chanel shows, green was the main color.  Kenzo mainly used moss green to compliment the animal print pieces, while Chanel used lime green in several looks. No matter the shade, green was all over the runway.

The last major trend that we saw was jewels. From broaches, to jeweled train cases, to bejeweled eyebrows, jewels were everywhere. Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, and Balmain were the main designers who set the trend.

NYX Cosmetics Expands Brand

NYX Cosmetics, a line often lauded as the affordable alternative to MAC Cosmetics, became a hit when it partnered with Ulta in 2008, but it has not been made readily available for those who have no access to the massive beauty retailer. However, the makeup brand has announced that it will be increasing its presence in a big way, coinciding with its launch of a spring 2012 makeup collection.

The company will be getting increased shelf space at Ulta and other professional makeup stores. It also has recently formed a partnership with Nordstrom. So far, NYX Cosmetics has successfully brought its makeup to about 20 Nordstrom stores, and it plans to hit the shelves of more retailers throughout the year.

NYX Cosmetics plans to expand within stores worldwide, in order to meet the growing demand for its products. This year, the company will add products to more German-based Douglas beauty retail stores. It is already part of the stock in nearly 100 Douglas stores, and it hopes to be sold in the remainder of them by the end of 2012. NYX Cosmetics will also launch in select stores in Australia and Canada throughout the year.

You can also expect to see the brand take advantage of its media outlets. NYX Cosmetics has one of the most popular YouTube channels of any beauty line, and its Facebook page has over 100,000 fans. To learn more about the brand, check out its website.

Get on Board With Louis Vuitton RTW Fall 2012

Marc Jacobs took Paris’ fashion elite back in time to present Louis Vuitton's fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection. The line started off with bags and luggage that were perfect for high-end train travelers, to be exact. That was exactly what Jacobs recreated.

A full-scale locomotive car was built, and its two massive steel doors opened to reveal the models, who were not alone. Each girl was accompanied by an assistant, dressed in an old-time porter uniform, who carried their bags for them.

The collection itself was all about layering. The models wore coats over skirts over cropped pants. Tall yet crumpled ponyskin hats with floral adornments sat on their heads, and square Mary Jane platforms were strapped to their feet. Many of the silhouettes were in an exaggerated bell shape, and the fabrics featured fanatical patterns. There were checkerboards, patchwork leathers, mosaic beading, and holographic tweeds and baubles.

Louis Vuitton's ready-to-wear collection was one that fought to walk the line between modern and old fashioned, yet certainly stood out from every other show we’ve seen so far.

Marni Collaborates with H&M

Lines extending around the block could be seen outside of select H&M stores on March 8, filled with shoppers who had been camping out since 3:30 a.m. While we know that H&M is a fabulous place to find great looks for a considerably great price, we can’t imagine camping outside for it. But, when it comes to amazing Italian designers paired with the amazing prices, we can! Italian label Marni has collaborated with H&M, offering its signature patterned pieces at select stores.

After waiting in the tremendous lines, shoppers were only given 10 minutes to shop the 70-piece collection for their favorite looks. Customers were only allowed to purchase one of each item, so you can just imagine the flock of fashionistas scrambling for the best finds.

The collection is made up of Marni’s signature styles, such as bold jewelry pieces, patterned dresses, scarves, and blouses.

Did you brave the mob on Thursday, and if so, what were your best finds?

D&G's Paisley Patterns for Spring

Out with the old and in with the paisley patterns. As March 20, the first official day of spring, inches forward, don't celebrate with an ice cream treat; celebrate instead with bold paisley patterns.

Rest assured that paisley prints are all the rage right now. D&G’s spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection supported this spring hypothesis in more ways than one. D&G had models swaddled in paisleys, prints, and retro patterns for their line. As the first day of spring nears, we can all indulge in paisley without feeling the slightest guilt of having early spring fever. After all, you can never wait too long in the land of fashion; one day a look is hip, and the next day it is out faster than a seamstress can say “paisley.” Get it while it's hot!

Chanel's Purple Passion

Chanel’s fall 2012 runway show spun the collection’s usual trademark of ladylike glam into relaxed, sporty looks. The season will pile layers upon layers of oversized jackets and billowy dresses with just a hint of metallic pants peeking out from underneath. Some reviews even compared Chanel’s runway set to Superman’s icy hideout. Along with the sharp, angular art design, models wore very little makeup. Well, except for those strong, pointed eyebrows made of jewels. It was surprising that model Freja Beha, a favorite of Karl Lagerfeld, was nowhere to be seen. However, an even bigger surprise was Miranda Kerr’s appearance on the runway.

Chanel worked the purple trend to perfection in the show. Among other runway shows that included Marc Jacobs, Blumarine, Gucci, and Nina Ricci, Chanel’s fall 2012 collection proved that next season will be decked out in all shades of the color purple. In the fall, we’ll see lots of purple coats, dresses, and bags. Even Karl Lagerfeld sealed his approval by mixing up his usual all-black style and wearing purple gloves at his show. The best accessory paired with the outfits in this collection was the purple velvet mini backpack.

A.P.C. Stayed Subtle at Paris Fashion Week

A.P.C. Fall 2012 Ready-to-Wear

People often see fashion on the runways and ask themselves, “Where am I going to wear that?” While it’s true that there is a slim chance that a person is going to wear a feathered sweater to the office, that’s what ready-to-wear lines are for. Except, the designers over at A.P.C. cut out the middle man this season and prepared a collection that works on the runway yet transitions seamlessly to everyday wear.

This collection featured a variety of washed denims and plaids, but let’s not forget to mention the signature layered look. The entire collection was subtle; not subtle by the way of boring, but subtle in a practical sense. Not everyone is comfortable in bright colors or intense patterns, so A.P.C. accomplished a clean and effective collection of looks that were both fashionable and professional.

A.C.P. went against the current fashion grain for fall by sticking to the traditional subtlety that the season brings.

Feather and Fur Reigned Supreme at Alexander McQueen

If there was one takeaway from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" exhibit, aside from a rough estimate of exactly how many people can pack themselves onto the Met’s steps, it’s that McQueen’s right-hand woman-cum-creative director Sarah Burton has her work cut out for her to keep the label on the must-see list. While it is not that hard to stay on the scene after you’ve designed Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, it is apparent from Alexander McQueen’s fall 2012 ready-to-wear show that Burton also shares her late mentor’s sense of dark, dramatic flair.

According to the McQueen show, “ready-to-wear” and “couture” aren’t mutually exclusive. Voluminous ruffled furs and feathers capped with exaggerated bell sleeves can now easily transition from the runway to retail. Models walked the fine line between très chic and Koosh ball in ultra-layered looks, which were adorably tapered at the waist with metallic silver bets shaped into flowers and bows. Each look varied only subtly from the one before it, allowing those in the audience to pay extra attention to detail — a peplum skirt here, an off-the-shoulder sleeve there. With every model remaining anonymous in blonde wigs and futuristic, visor-like shades, all eyes were on the clothes, as if you could look away from those gorgeously textured designs. The Royal Wedding may be over, but Alexander McQueen is definitely keeping the fairy tale alive.

Everyone Loves Lanvin and Alber Elbaz's Voice

In his tenth year as man of the Lanvin house, Alber Elbaz dazzled crowds at his Paris runway show. The bow-tied, bespectacled designer is one of the most well-liked names in fashion; he’s hospitable, humble, and knows how to make clothes that flatter a woman’s body. Elbaz provides delicious treats at every show.

"I always think, if I were an editor, and I was invited to a show, and I would have to wait for 45 minutes in the dark, or in the cold, or in the heat, maybe I would like to have a fresh drink or a piece of chocolate.," Elbaz told WWD. "Maybe I would love to enjoy a sandwich."

As far as Lanvin's fall 2012 RTW collection went, we saw lots of ruffles. (The good kind.) Every piece seemed to wrap around just right. As a whole, the looks had everything in every color. Lanvin’s pieces covered plenty of ground from solid, bold hues to black, brocade and jeweled patterns, including cinched belts and soft textures. At the end of the show, Elbaz sang “Que Sera Sera” with a band accompaniment. Even though he was self-conscious about his singing voice, Elbaz managed to make everyone smile, since critics and guests alike described it with one word: adorable.

Real Men Wear Scarves

Winter may finally be making its well-anticipated exit to make way for the warm spring weather. With it goes plenty of great accessories and other articles of clothing.

Essentially, the concept of layering goes right out the window when spring hits. You hang up your heavy coats, tuck away your wool socks, and bench your sweaters. However, there is one accessory that has transitioned from a winter-only garment to a year-round article: the scarf. For a long time, the scarf had a bad reputation for being a lumpy piece of fabric to keep your neck from getting cold; but, over the years, it has become a fashion staple.

A new level of notoriety came with that transformation. The scarf is no longer only used for its practicality. Now, it is used not only to keep necks warm, but it can also be the deciding factor between a drab outfit and an extraordinary one. A bold, printed scarf can serve as an accent to the classic black T-shirt and jeans combination, making even the most fashion-unconscious person seem trendy. But, don’t be limited; there are plenty of different types of scarves to choose from, including a traditional scarf made from a lighter fabric.

Just think of how fancy you’ll look this spring, riding with the top down and your linen scarf flowing in the wind behind you. Life may not be that fanciful, but you should still give scarves a shot past winter.

Roland Mouret's Wintery RTW Fall Collection

Roland Mouret’s new collection was more winter than fall in several ways. The most obvious clue was the color palette. There were no bright reds or mustard yellows that we’ve been used to seeing on the runways lately. Instead, Mouret used pale blues, icey grays, black, and white. A soft, pale green was the boldest color in the collection.

Winter was the inspiration for the collection; a Parisian winter, to be exact. In 1947, Paris experienced an extremely harsh winter. About the connection between his clothes and Paris in 1947, Roland Mouret told WWD, “There was a sense of contradiction between a new rising elegance, an haute couture attitude whilst others struggled to keep warm.”

The collection mostly comprised of suits and dresses. The clothes featured the form-fitting shapes that Mouret is known for, including A-line skirts, origami-styled twists, furs, and skinny belts on the waist. Mouret used folding and layering to serve as “a protective layer” around the models.

Keds Shoes Start March With Strong Buzz

Keds and Pro-Keds have both been busy over the past week, releasing a few things that their fans and consumers can look forward to.

Last month, Keds announced a limited spring 2012 capsule collection of its Champion shoe, produced in collaboration with Madewell. Featuring multicolored stripes and polka dots, the design of the shoes were inspired by art-deco elements from the Madewell spring 2012 collection.

Also, in late February, Pro-Keds released its spring lookbook in a more visual form. The video is extremely simple, as it follows two friends who take a trip through New York City. Set to a slow-paced hip hop beat with almost no dialogue, the video effectively showcases the spring launch.

Finally, in the spirit of saving the best for last, Keds has released its fall 2012 lookbook on the heels of its collaboration with Opening Ceremony last season. Varsity cardigans and crewnecks, lightweight trenches, cropped print pants, and sixties-inspired dresses make up the collection.

With such a powerful showing in February, Keds  is off to a steady start as we enter the first full week of March. Feel free to check out the Pro-Keds video lookbook after the jump.

Seeing Red Past Winter

During New York Fashion Week, there has always been a collection of red dresses, but is red going to be a lasting trend? If this fashion season is any indication, the answer is yes! From the red carpet, to the catwalk, to street wear, red fashion is just about everywhere. This bold color is always eye-catching, and it has the ability to make any outfit stand out.

This year, we have seen several designers like Monique Lhuillier, Zac Posen, Donna Karan, and Jason Wu incorporate red into their shows. It seems that this trend will stay around for awhile, even after the winter months, so stock up on  red pieces and accessories fast!

Looks by Larissa: Black on Black

Today, I decided to wear an all-black ensemble. I wanted to show off my new H&M button-up crop top. I love this piece so much, because it is fabulous and very classic, plus it is flattering on me. The tie detail is,  by far, my favorite. I paired it with my favorite high-waisted vintage jeans. Next, I switched up the look by adding some strappy black wedges; the thick crisscrossing straps are super modern yet edgy.

The final piece is a vintage jean jacket by Liz Claiborne. I like the look of the jacket, as it is very clean and it has shoulder padding, which gives it a retro look. It is definitely fun to match it with feminine clothing items, to create an interesting juxtaposition between them. The gray day set off the outfit perfectly, since we stopped by a farmland on our way back to Portland.

Check out a detail shot after the break....

Hot and Sticky Mulberry Ad for SS'12

There is a spring awakening in the fantastical land of fashion, and it’s got something to do with the stylish dwellers across the pond. Mulberry released its spring/summer 2012 ad campaign, which was bursting with large, flashy melted ice cream cones, dandy stripes, and hot hues.

Mulberry’s latest campaign has that boardwalk “honky tonk” air to it. The series of ads was photographed by Tim Walker, and Lindsey Wixson and Frida Gustavsson were the two models featured in the whimsical spread. Besides the vibrant, coastal boardwalk background, the Mulberry models showed off the bright spring jackets that were paired with festive wedges, electrifying the surrounding area. While Mulberry’s spring/summer 2012 ad was loud in color, they toned it down by matching jolts of yellows, blues, and pinks with earthy neutral tones. It was sheer, sticky genius on the Brit brand’s part.

A Sneak Peek at Madewell’s Spring Catalog

Meet your new "prints charming." A preview of what Madewell has to offer this spring has been released, and let’s just say the looks won’t stay on this J.Crew spin-off’s shelves too long. The lookbook’s appropriately named “Mix Master” section featured polka dots, stripes, and florals on everything from signature scarves to playful socks, which were cheekily shown with flats and heels. This season, Madewell took a twist on classic patterns by toying with scale, as shown in the pointilized to oversized polka dots on the dress pictured above. We’re dying to get our hands on their dizzying take on a pinstripe pant, which looks like a delightful a bar code.

These pieces will be available both in-store and online on Tuesday, March 6, but you can start plotting which printed pieces you’d like to mix and match now. Hey, it’s okay to break that cardinal rule about mixing stripes with polka dots. After all, you have Jenna Lyons' permission.

Balmain RTW Fall 2012

In his second season as a designer for Balmain, Oliver Rousteing is not holding anything back, and proof of that was found in Balmain’s ready-to-wear fall 2012 collection. In the line, which was inspired by a gem owned by Elizabeth Taylor, Rousteing went all in with fabrics, embroidery, jewels, and more.

Boxy cut jackets paired with slim trousers, as well as form-fitting dresses and miniskirts, made up a majority of the collection. Quilted patterns, velvet, and dozens of pearls swamped the entire line, yet it remained fairly practical.

The collections color palette was comprised of deep greens and royal violets, along with a host of blush tones and metallic and gold accents,. Those colors, combined with armor-like jeweled coverings, metals, and embroidery, almost gave Balmain's latest collection a bold, medieval feel. The collection was, indeed, bold, and it was as beautiful as the piece that inspired it.

Dior Mixed Ballet and Fashion for Fall 2012

Paris Fashion Week is officially in full swing, and Dior decided to take on a different theme for its show this year. Normally, we see much more skin in shows, but Dior was focused on skirts with long hems and cinched waists. The skirts were fuller than we have seen in the past, and they were designed to resemble what a ballet dancer would wear. Even the shoes were modeled after ballet point shoes, just in a high-heel version.

The colors were very soft and natural, focusing on pinks and nudes. All of the skirts in the show were below the knee and full of panels, which gave them flair. For tops, we saw traditional jackets made from wool and belted at the waist. By using classic fabrics like cashmere, silk, and wool, this collection was nothing short of elegant. The contemporary style mixed with ballet inspiration was the perfect blend of classical and modern.

165 Years of Cartier

In honor of its 165th anniversary, Cartier has released a short film called "L’Odyssée de Cartier," which follows the path of a bejeweled panther. The feline comes to life and travels to Russia, China, India and France, which are all places that played integral parts in bringing the luxury brand to where it is now.

The film features flashes of beautiful rings as the panther leaps through silver bangles, encounters a gold dragon, steps through an opulent land of trees dripping with jewels, and more. The film ends with Cartier muse Shalom Harlow, who is draped in a red dress and diamonds that are worth every girl's envy. The panther presses itself against her, as the classic red Cartier box closes on the scene.

The film, which took two years to make, is emblematic of the luxury of the brand, which is both traditional and exotic. The brand's image and history is captured perfectly in the silent film, accompanied by the orchestral music of Pierre Adenot.

Balenciaga Professional Chic at Paris Fashion Week

Balenciaga kicked off their fall 2012 line yesterday in Paris. Like the city, the looks were all designed to exude professional chic sophistication.

Each look represented a role in the make-believe offices of Balenciaga Inc. It was a clever way to make business casual a bit less casual. Office clothes can be borderline boring, but Balenciaga definitely showed us that it doesn’t have to be the case.

Bold skirts, silky slacks, leather, and bright color dominated the show. The collection paid close attention to detail and playful hemlines. The looks mixed both sparkle and black with bold color for a dramatic look, which really worked as an outfit. Intricate designs and rock-star splashes completed the most eccentric looks.

Kristen Stewart showed her sophisticated side at the Paris show with an ensemble that was more glammed up than usual. Often casual in public, Stewart donned leather and florals for a more upscale Parisian look at the show.

Natural Beauty Rules at Balmain

Every girl wishes that she could roll out of bed in the morning, wash her hair, slap on some concealer, and leave the house. However, most women don't believe they look socially acceptable unless they style their hair and slap on a full face of makeup. Consider Balmain's fall 2012 beauty look as your ticket to freedom.

At the designer's runway show for Paris Fashion Week, hairstylist Sam McKnight and makeup artist Tom Pecheux practically handed out permission slips for women across the world to walk out the front door with very minimal effort.

McKnight wanted the hair to remain a bit textured yet totally natural. He simply washed the models' hair with Pantene Pro-V Repair and Protect Shampoo, and, for the most part, he left it at that. Only a few girls with frizzy, dry hair needed a bit of styling wax to create a slightly more polished appearance.

Since the collection was inspired by luxury, Pecheux made it a priority to give the models a clean, flawless face. He concentrated on using strategically placed concealer to hide any imperfections, and finished off by lightly contouring the face and powdering the T-zone to get rid of shine. For models whose brows were bleached at the Milan shows, he added pencil eyeliner and colored mascara to fill in the missing color.

The whole look could be described as natural yet put-together. It's the perfect opportunity to sleep in for those extra ten minutes.

Looks by Larissa: Winter Day

I woke up this morning to a winter wonderland, as my school’s campus was covered in snow. As the sun came out and glinted off of the white blanket of fresh snow, I decided to pick out a comfy, white knit sweater with a basic V-neck. Lately, I've found that I am drawn to knits with low or unusual neck lines, because they make even the most basic sweater interesting.

I picked this sweater up while vintage shopping. You can find some beautiful vintage sweaters if you are up for spending the time to look for them. I am rocking this H&M black circle scarf, because it was pretty chilly outside. I love finding different ways to experiment with this scarf. It is definitely a staple item in my closet. Again, I am rocking my awesome lace-up Dolce Vita boots. These shoes are easy to dress up or down, and they are surprisingly comfortable!
