Bar Hopping Survival Kit

It's new year's eve and with a stomach full of pizza and champagne I'm geared up to hit the town. I haven't always been so prepared, in fact I'm infamous for taking eight million years to get ready to go out. Now, it's not because I'm a diva, it's because I need at least 3 hours to walk around the house with a befuddled look, accidentally running my extremities in to door frames. It's taken years of practice and several evenings of my boyfriend freaking out for my evening routine to become so streamlined. So babies, in the spirit of the fresh new year, I've compiled a list of bar hopping must haves to make your partying that much easier!

1) Flats: No one wants to forgo heels altogether; they're the linchpin of a perfect evening get up. But these days everybody from Tory Burch to Dr. Scholl is making little fold-up flats that fit right in your purse! Switch to these little dudes at the third bar and you won't be walking like a sea-sick cowboy by the end of the night.
Option B) Get so drunk you don't care about your foot pain. (Not recommended. Includes knee bruises and Lady Ga Ga impressions.)

2) Lipgloss: Unless you plan on staying pretty damn sober, don't bring lipstick to the bar. Sure, flapper-esque crimson lips look great with your dress, but by martini four your application skills will greatly decline. Stick to something sheer with a tiny hint of color that will keep you looking put together. That way, when you don't quite color in the lines it's not a big deal.

3) Hair-tie: If someone starts puking, you're to the rescue with a quick ponytail. If you decide to hit a club, you can do a quick chignon to keep your hair from getting sweaty. The uses are endless.

4) Eyeliner: I don't know about you, but I use bar hopping as an excuse to perfect my copious-amounts-of-eye-makeup application skills. One of my best girlfriends, Katie, has this insane ability to perfectly line her eyes. She can do it in the dark, she can do it in the park...you get the picture. This girl always has gorgeous smoky eyes with a perfectly geometric eyeliner application. After seven years of trying, I can't figure out what her secret is, but I do know that she always re-applies. So take a tip from Katie, and keep a stick in your bag, just in case.

Well, kiddies, I truly hope this list helps you get your shit together. Now I've got to grab my friends & survival kit and hit the bars. Good luck, and I'll see you on the mean streets of party town!

Rose Colored Glasses

It's official. Honeysuckle pink is the new black. PANTONE, the mega corporation that is responsible for the production of color pigments used in most interior design and fashion endeavors, announced the shade's reign this month. Why grandma's-beach-house-towel-pink you ask? Well, Pantone reps are touting this color as the panacea for all worldly ills: "A dynamic reddish pink, Honeysuckle is encouraging and uplifting. It elevates our psyche beyond escape, instilling the confidence, courage and spirit to meet the exhaustive challenges that have become part of everyday life," their website claims.

Now, with designers like Peter Som and Badgley Mischka jumping on the Honeysuckle wagon, I'm not too quick too poo-poo the shade. But really folks, let's purchase our new pink frocks and then actually do something to "instill confidence and courage" in style.

Robyn - Dancing On My Own

Robyn. Wow, what a girl. I am very intrigued by her. She has the kind of look that you just want to stare at her. You notice her every feature, from her body to her hair to makeup to her teeth to her one earring to her shoes to her outfits. Robyn has the look of Watts from the 80s movie, Some Kind of Wonderful. She has that tomboy like charm, but is also very cute and beautiful. From the words of my sister, she resembles Arizona from Grey's Anatomy. One may not be able to decide if she is gay or straight. I can see even straight girls getting a little girl crush on this one. She is truly an artist. I wouldn't be surprised if she really is an artist. Not only with painting, but I'm sure she writes her own lyrics. By the way she sings and expresses her feelings through the words, it is obvious these feelings are real. On Jay Leno tonight, she was dancing all by herself on the stage. This looked slightly out of place, but the lyrics are "Dancing On My Own", so this does fit.

Francesca Woodman

As the work of Francesca Woodman graces the walls of the Victoria Miro, it is only fitting that this retrospect hangs in all its glory as a full on museum exhibition having previously toured various European institutions. As a photographer Woodman's extraordinary growth as a commercial and critical thinker and artist means that she has gained a reputation as a great American Photographer in the last quarter of a century.

It's often impossible to comprehend or at least acknowledge that Woodman passed away at 22 years of age and was a relatively unknown artist. What is sad is that she died not knowing at the time the acknowledgment and respect that would come for her work. What is amazing is the tenderness and intelligence of theme and image that she could capture at such a raw vulnerable age. Her representation of the body and her small, square format, typically in moody monochrome are instantly recognizable as Woodmans work. A beautiful retrospect of a wonderful picture maker and thinker, until January 2011

The New Hue

Over the past few seasons, monochromatic looks have been created using minimalistic principles and hardly any color at all. The result was startlingly simple, but was well received by critics and consumers alike during all three major fashion weeks. As we move into the pre-fall season, I’ve noticed that monochromatic outfits are still very “in”, but they have taken a turn for the playful. Instead of head-to-toe black, grey, white, or camel, this upcoming season is filled with looks composed of multiple hues of the same bright color. For example, Oscar de la Renta‘s pre-fall collection showcased a plethora of single color, multi-hue looks using pinks, greens, reds, and golds. Standout looks included an emerald green sweater paired with a slightly lighter green knee-length skirt, complete with an oversized bow at the waist; and a neon pink ensemble which, though similar to the all-green look, managed to tie in feminine lace detailing and an always coveted boyfriend style blazer. The result of mixing the basics of monochromatic clothing and all of the eye-catching hues of the color spectrum is everything a great look should be- simple, yet detailed, and playful without being over-the-top.

Ankle Boots: You MUST have the right legs for them!

For Christmas, I've been spending time in my home town. While here, I have noticed women trying to be trendy. I am so pleased to see that women in a small town KNOW about the latest styles in fashion. However, I am not okay with women trying.... to be stylish when they do not have what it takes to pull it off. Take ankle boots, for example. I have seen women wearing them, but they are women with either short legs, cankles or no definition in their calves. There are many styles of heels that can make women with these types of legs look good, but ankle boots are not among them. Key note: if you're ankles fill out the boots, you should not be wearing them. There should be extra room. Keep this under consideration for New Years!

New Trend to Fill Your Post Christmas Shopping

Each year as the fashion seasons come and go, so to the trends that explode onto the front stage with astonishing power. A teacher of mine best described a trend as something that appears absurd in the beginning but slowly takes hold as the days past; something you first see in disbelief and refuse to believe you would ever wear, but slowly creeps into your world until you wake up one morning and all of a sudden, you are one of the masses. Everyone has fallen trap to it, hell…a few days ago I caught myself wearing leggings with an over sized shirt just short enough to make the leggings function as pants, something I vowed never to do (and will still fight even myself on). This season is no different with styles emerging that leave everyone wonder….how WOULD I wear that?

The newer trends that are emerging range everywhere from vibrant fluorescent prints (ala Prada), dark leather bondage (ala Givenchy masks…in fact I saw this one on a blog’s gift guide…go figure…give the gift of gags for Christmas…), and lots of structure with a little bit of a harder edge (this strong suiting and tailored looks ala Celine). So, with Christmas past, and shopping for yourself back to the guilt free zone, how will you be bringing these out-there trends into your wardrobe for the New Year? Myself…I think I’ll try a little bit of all of them!

Tis the Season

There’s really no easy way to say it. But the time is here, I think you know what time of year I’m talking about. The day we receive presents that cause our brains to do the quick inventory of what face your making, how to control the look of disgust, how to say thanks without sounding too over the top that they know its fake, or on the other end…not enough so now you’re forced to say the rest of the day, “No really, I love it…I swear I didn’t react because I was just TOO happy…you KNOW how much I love fluorescent green pearl encrusted knit booty gym shorts, they’re really my passion in life, THANK YOU!”

Nobody wins in that situation. Except maybe the retailer if they didn’t give you a gift receipt and for the life of you, you can’t figure out where it came from. So what to do? I can honestly say I will be no help to you in terms of how to react; my face is known for having a voice all its own. I can, however, divulge in a few suggestion for what to do with it the next day.

1) EBay…someone somewhere in the world is bound to have a need for it. Maybe make sure your friend doesn’t know your username. Or just make a new one.

2) Google…maybe you can find the retailer? Buy yourself the matching tank top? Dive in head first…maybe lime green really is your color and she was just trying to show you. A true friend that one, pushing your boundaries like that…

3) Burn it. Safely of course. I recommend low sulfur charcoal.

4) And my personal favorite…add their name to the revenge list to make sure and find something equally hideous for next year. Maybe you have another present as awe inspiring as this one, lying around from last year that you can quickly swap for the one sitting in front of them.

Snowblind: Tom Ford

This year, I think my family's gift giving may have single handedly revitalized the global economy. And so, today marks the season in which I begin to wallow in Christmas wrap and have materialistic freak outs! Or, I mean, um, bubble over with peace and joy.

So let's get to the good stuff:

Among my ridiculous haul this year is...FA LA LA LA LA...A pair of Tom Ford sunnies!

Ford, most famous for re-vamping the Gucci image and heading Yves St Laurent, launched his own line in 2005. The TOM FORD line is world renowned for gorgeous tailored suits and curvy, seventies inspired sunglasses. In fact, A list celebrities from Brad and Angie, to Charlize Theron have been spotted wearing Ford's frames!

These babies are unlike any other sunglasses I've owned, they hug the curves of your face and have a wide tapered frame that seem like they might actually keep out sunlight and other champagne-hangover-inducing-nuisances. I fully believe this particular gifting was a test; I always said that when I am able to own nice sunglasses without sitting on them then I am a true adult..we'll see folks. Let's just put it this way: it was either Tom Ford sunnies or a semester of grad school. Uh, doy!

Kate Spade: Planned Adulthood

In the spirit of recounting my holiday haul on the internet, let's talk about a both practical and pants-peeingly awesome gift I received from my ever intuitive boyfriend! A Kate Spade planner! This would make a fantastic winter solstice or late Christmas present, or perhaps you've got a lady friend with a wintery birthday. Maybe you have a ritual of buying yourself a new planner each year. No matter the case, Kate Spade planners are a fantastic gift for any woman and a great way to say: "Listen, you've got too much designer shit in your closet, so here's something potentially useful" or "Here's a fancy calendar; now please stop standing me up on our dinner dates". Fortunately I lie somewhere in-between the aforementioned categories so I'm the perfect candidate for a compact Kate Spade agenda!

Kate Spade planners come in nylon, canvas, and leather and are incredibly well made so they're certain to hold up all year. The brand, notoriously classic with just a hint of bubbly playfulness, offers yearly inserts that feature adorable hand sketches and doodles of champagne glasses and hearts and a myriad of other girly things. I personally can't function without a little space to unpack my brain and make lists but I hate the cluttered and unstylish look of scrap paper and tattered notebooks. The Kate Spade planner not only a more eco-conscious choice but you can keep it together in style! Pick one up to start off the new year with some semblance of order...and hey, just because you look like an adult doesn't mean you have to plan like one. Concert and parties on the 26th, bourbon tasting on the 28th, building a living room tent and drinking my weight in champagne?? I'm simply booked...

D&G Light Blue Commercial: Your thoughts?

Has anyone seen this commercial by Dolce and Gabbana lately? This is sexual, sexy, comical and hilarious all at once. When I watch, I'm not sure if I should be turned on or if I should be laughing. The girl is gorgeous and the guy is more handsome than any guy I've ever met in person. All of a sudden the two start making out and the video turns into a soft porn scene. I'll be honest, if I were a child, I would cover my eyes with my hands and cringe. Every time I see this commercial, I think about the children who could be watching this. I completely understand the sexual portion of this advertisement and love watching it, but I'm not sure that it should be featured on everyday television for anyone to see. It is one thing for sexual advertisements to be in magazines such as W, where you know it is coming. Do you think this is too sexual to run on everyday TV or do you think America is opening up from our often, consider by the rest of the world, prude ways? After all sex does sell, but what about the little kids, are we influencing them?

Karlie Kloss

Has anyone realized that Karlie Kloss is a Senior in Highschool? I just did, today. I thought she was about a year younger than me, but nope, I was wrong. I met her today in the mall right down the road from my apartment, here in St. Louis, Missouri! She told me she attends the high school that is right down the road from my university. I had no idea! How amazing is it that this young woman, who has had sooo many modeling jobs for the top designers in the industry, has the time to also attend high school?! I was stunned. She is also the nicest girl ever, she was so humble that an everyday girl knew who she was. I couldn't believe this top model is four years younger than me. She was the tallest girl around, but she knows how to blend in to a crowd. She is as beautiful in person as she is in the photographs in the ads and photo spreads in magazines. That is so reassuring! That models can be genuinely gorgeous, with perfect skin, a lovely smile, as well as genuinely sweet.

Divided into four sub themes Belonging and Confronting, Storytelling, Building, and Performance Aware: Art Fashion Identity and the practitioners showcasing explores a huge array of topics. Explorations from Mella Jaarsma interest in the process of adapting to the lifestyle and traditions of a new environment. Her experiment of this through her architectural garment construction Shelter Me 1. To, Chalayan use of Bunraku theatre, to examine the manipulative element of the fashion industry. Well (G)loved

I grew up in Seattle. It’s cold there. I moved to New York. It’s cold here.  As you can imagine by this time I should be well versed in the art of dressing for the arctic … and for the most part, I am. I can wear double tights with the best of them, I’ve mastered the art of the knit hat … hell, I have my own heat pack. Despite all of this, FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I hate gloves. No seriously, I hate them. I don’t know what about them it is, but even when I was little and standing neck high in snow attempting to make some sort of snowman in the tiniest of attention spans that I have, I refused to wear gloves I think it has something to do with the fact that every time I put them on my hands feel so clunky that I feel like people are staring at them.

Ok, ok we’ve thoroughly established my aversion to gloves, but I may have come across my first pair to change that. Yes, they are texting gloves, but really that’s just a bonus. They’re light weight enough that they don’t feel clunky, but thick enough to keep your hands nice and toasty. But what really got me was how soft they are; they make baby butt look like sandpaper. I can’t think of anything much better to tempt this hater into crossing over, but I’m open to suggestions.

Chunky ... but in the good way!

I feel like every time I turn around some news channel, radio channel, or loud mouth person is reminding me of how flipping cold it is in New York. Okay they say it's 30 but feels like -231438 degrees kind of cold; and I don’t know about you, but I’m the kind of person that doesn’t really appreciate being constantly reminded of just how cold I really am. I appreciate you pointing it out, Captain Obvious, that yes I can see my breath, but trust me I’m fully aware of the extremities I can’t feel right now.

What is the one upside to this kind of weather? The entrance of my favorite kind of clothing: the super chunky knit sweater. I’m obsessed, I dream about it, I wait to be able to pull it out of my closet every year. There is nothing better than a sweater that thoroughly envelopes you and is practically begging you to make some hot cocoa and crack that last book you bought but just can’t seem to find the time to read. To me, the chunky knit sweater is a lot like the leather coat; it’s timeless, a little bit edgy (worn correctly), completely comfortable, and gives that too-cool-for-school chic look that says “Oh yes, I just rolled out of bed and threw this on, but DAMN if I don’t look fabulous.”

Head to toe I can think of nothing better than a long chunky sweater, maybe belted, with some nice flat booties and disheveled hair. This is the perfect escape from those sweat pants Hannah pointed out a few days ago (I mean really, who didn’t read her article and look down just to be reminded they too were wearing sweats, I know I did…) without exerting too much effort that we melt away any of that winter fat we’ve worked so hard on storing.

The Fabric Works

It was not only Hauser & Wirth that was proud and enthused to announce the inauguration of its new space at 23 Savile Row with a solo exhibition by the late Louise Bourgeois, For those lucky enough to stumble upon this new space and the Bourgeois collection, it was a rare find and the the most delectable of delicacies. As the most important female artist of our time, for seventy years she transformed thoughts and emotions into beautiful works of art in radical, complex, intense and excessively influential manners of work. This collection, 'The Fabric Works' are abstract and geometric drawings deriving from the juxtapositions of patterns printed on materials. In 2002, Bourgeois to weave thin strips of her garments together and from this developed later polygonal strips, which would read how different patterns of printed materials would compose when stitched together. Fabric for Louise Bourgeois must, in many ways, have been like returning to a long lost friend having played an important role in her life. Her parents owned a tapestry restoration workshop and from the age of twelve she began helping out by drawing in the sections of the missing arts that were to be repaired. In time as the thinking and creativity of Bourgeois was to develop and grow it would play an important part in her work. ‘I always had the fear of being separated and abandoned. The sewing is my attempt to keep things together and make things whole’. This beautiful collection is only showing until Saturday the 18th of December at Hauser and Wirth Savile Row, so run!

A Picture's Worth A Thousand Words

Curves are in!

Yes! This is so exciting!

"What is?" You may ask... The answer is that I am so excited that a thin, but healthy woman is featured in this Express ad. Express is one of the big advertisers in most fashion magazines. This is a big deal. This woman is absolutely gorgeous, but she also actually looks like a woman. She has natural curves and genuine beauty. She isn't fake. She isn't trying too hard to fit this mold of the perfect model beauty. She has the whole package. This is inspiring.

This especially makes me happy because of this conspiracy I've been noticing in the media about eating carbs. In Christmas movies such as Just Friends and The Holiday, Anna Faris and Cameron Diaz say that the thought of eating carbs makes them want to kill themselves. This is absolutely sad. Why should we not eat carbs when our bodies need them. Without carbs, we do not gain the fatty tissue we need to be at least a little curvy, depending on our body types. Without these fatty tissues, we look like 12-year-old girls! This I can attest to! It drives me crazy. I have lost seven pounds in the past week because I never got around to buying bread. I didn't have the time and I ran out of money from buying Christmas presents. Some may say this is a good thing that I lost weight, but at 5'8", being a person with ADD and a person with hypoglycemia, losing that much weight isn't the best thing when finals are coming up. This affected my mood, strength, energy level and my attention span. I can only imagine what the models in the hottest runway shows for the hottest designer labels go through. This can't be good with having so many women in one place at one time. This makes me nervous.

P.S. By no means am I calling this Express model fat, I am completely complimenting her and am very proud of the advertising department and for the director of model casting to choose such a beautiful woman to represent them!

Falling into a Gothic Wonderland

In my opinion, a really great fashion film has clothes so haunting and mystical that you are left imagining them days later. The last time the fashion scene saw something of any magnitude, that left ripples merely awaiting its release, was Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. After having watched movie after movie come and go, the time has come for another with the same obsession-worthy cast of clothing: Black Swan. The movie, featuring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, is a dark, ballet thriller (have those words ever been uttered together?) whose costume design featured none other than the Mulleavy sisters. I cannot think of anyone better suited to costume a trip into Gothic wonderland than them, a duo known for their ability to make violence and horror feel romantic and ethereal in both their collaborations and fashion line, Rodarte.

Both a Black and White Swan costume was featured in the movie, decked out in every kind of Swarovski crystal imaginable (250,000 in the movie in total) and the sisters seemed to work every angle of mirroring the dichotomy and torturous struggle that played out in the movie. Early this summer sketches began leaking of the close to 40 pieces the set designed for the movie, and they are beyond breathtaking. And despite the macabre and edge-of-your-seat feel of the movie, you can’t help but transform a girly childhood dream of growing up to be the sweet princess ballerina, to the dark, mesmerizing one outfitted in the minds of the Mulleavy sisters.

Bring on the glitz and glamor

New years eve is fast approaching. With champaign and noise makers ready to go, we all have that wild 2011 party in mind.

Problem: WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR?

Solution: If you want to shine and stand out, start the year off right with metallics.

Bronze, silver, and gold metallics give a polished look that are playful, yet sophisticated for any occasion. New years eve is the perfect time to break away from the ordinary and try something daring. Whether you wear a metallic dress or eyeshadow, this flashy finish will not only get you compliments by your friends, but attract that cute boy you see across the room (hello new years kiss). We're in a season where neutral colors are dominating a women's wardrobe, so why not add an element of surprise? You're entire look doesn't have to be one shiny disco ball, (although, it's New Years so WHY NOT?) but you could have flashes of the trend by playing around with purses, pants, or shoes to mix and match. Marc Jacobs has plenty of metallic examples, as does Dries Van Noten and H&M. This year, don't be bland and boring with a little black dress - spruce it up with a metallic finish and you will shine the entire night through.

Winter Beauty

Just as there are four seasons of weather, there are four corresponding seasons of beauty. In the spring, it’s typical to want to start experimenting with color. In the summer, it’s all about bronzer and barely-there eye makeup. In the fall, hair colors darken and makeup is left clean and simple. In the winter, many women aren’t exactly sure how to make the transition. I never really understood how to properly apply “wintery” makeup until I saw this photo, which has instantly inspired me.

To achieve this look, there are a lot of different steps that you’ll need to take. In order to create the perfect canvas on which to apply makeup, make sure to moisturize every day and every night before bed. The harsh cold weather tends to really dry out the skin, which can cause your makeup to flake and become extremely noticeable. So, once you have a smooth surface to work with, you can begin to create the base. Start with a foundation or tinted moisturizer that matches your skin tone, dab concealed on any problem areas, and then set with a fine loose powder. While you allow this to set for a minute or two, fill in your brows with a pencil in a shade darker than your hair color. It’s important to not go too dark, because you will then look like you drew them on with a sharpie (which, in my opinion, is a cardinal sin of makeup). Next, curl your lashes and apply a single coat of lengthening mascara, and line the top lash line with a black kohl eye pencil. In order to make your eyes really pop the way Emma Watson's do in the photograph, apply highlighter or white eye shadow on the inner corners of the eye. To finish the look, swipe on some deep red lipstick and add just the slightest dusting of a rosy colored blush. The look is perfect for night time, but it can be worn during the day as well as long as you lose the lip color.

Twelve Days of Dresses

If you’ve already read my last post, you’re probably aware that I am on the hunt for the perfect holiday dress. However, I realized that all of the dresses that I picked were totally out of my price range. Marc Jacobs, Milly, and Juicy Couture are a bit too much of a splurge for a dress exclusively for the holiday season, so I’ve spent the last week looking for some more wallet-friendly options. I set my budget at $100 and began scouring the Internet, but I found that way too many of my favorite inexpensive retailers just didn’t have the kind of quality I was looking for. After combing through the selection at H&M, Topshop, and Forever21, I decided to check out Urban Outfitters. Last year around this time I was incredibly disappointed with UO’s holiday dress selection, so my expectations were low. However, as soon as I clicked on the website, a banner titled “The 12 Days of Dresesses” appeared and I knew that I had just struck gold. The first thing that caught my attention once I clicked on the banner was the way the page is set up. The 12 dresses are divided into four rows of three, and as you move your mouse across the images, the models in the picture begin to move! As a result, I was able to see the way that each dress looks on the body in 3D, something that Urban Outfitter has never offered before. 

Winter Fashion is Changing!

Red and Black are No Longer the Only Hip Winter Colors! Tan, a color typically meant for the fall, is becoming a common color for the latest winter coats and boots. Everywhere I look, I see tan leather boots. In the past, besides UGGs, black was the only color of boots you'd see. That has completely changed. Gray, tan, beige, brown. Brown was a color you might see, but not as commonly as you might see this year. This might be a good thing for people who prefer beige and brown earth tones. Black is not for everybody. Brown is not for everybody. Now people have a choice. For a woman who may think black would not be the appropriate color with her cream colored coat, tan might be that right color to finish off her classy golden winter look. Certain people look better in lighter colors as opposed to others who need that dark shade around their fair complexion during the winter months.

Virtue and Vice

Another day, another literary-to-big-screen adaptation. There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson wants to direct a film version of Inherent Vice, the 2009 novel from genius reclusive writer Thomas Pynchon. The book is made for cinema: a charismatic, burnt-out private detective named Doc Sportello, a mysterious disappearance, a bevy of beautiful women, and a good-looking cop, all set in Malibu and Las Vegas after the Summer of Love.

Rumor has it Robert Downey Jr. might play the lead male role of Sportello. Keep your fingers crossed for a decent adaptation – this might be one killer of a film.

"We're dying" to dress like Rachel Zoe

You would have to be living under a very drab, un-fashioney rock to have not yet heard of Rachel Zoe. This woman is a business powerhouse, having made a glittering name for herself as a fashion stylist with no formal fashion training. Zoe has worked with some of my favorite industry girls from Anne Hathaway to Kate Hudson. Her Bravo Television show "The Rachel Zoe Project" has achieved cult status and she will be debuting a line on HSN in the fall of 2011.

At my boyfriend's recent cast party for the fantastic piece "Dog sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead," I fluttered about the foyer nervously with a vodka tonic in my hand. My boyfriend, sensing my jumpiness, told me to go talk to the kitchen full of handsome, fashioney, gay boys.

"No," I squeaked "I'm scared, they're so pretty! I want them to be my friiiiiiends."
"Talk to them about clothes, they'll love it," he suggested.

(Now kids, I know this sounds incredibly stereotypical, but this particular group of gay men really do love high fashion. SO WHAT.)

"IS THAT REAL CHANEL?" someone squealed!
"I DON'T KNOW, I GOT IT AT GOODWILL!" I yelled triumphantly.

Conversation quickly moved to The Olsen Twins and their various delectable fashion lines (cue my infamous sucked-in-cheek-pouty Olsen face) and Rachel Zoe. After discussion with my panel of fashioney guys and sermon on the nuances of "bohemian chic" and "hippie haute," I've compiled a concise yet informative list of must-haves so that all may get his or her respective Zoe on:

1. Faux Fur Vest: I was recently informed that some faux-fur is actually real and made out of "Racoon Dogs". I'm not joking so uh...avoid that stuff.

2. A Turban: Rachel Zoe can some how do this without looking like a Tsar or a crazy, smelling of pee, Auntie. I'm not sure that anyone else can, but I'm willing to try. Maybe a nice Hermes headscarf will do the trick?

3. Lots of Rings: This one should be easy enough. Vintagey is always good; but don't go for plastic seventies baubles. Stick with rhinestones, brass, or real diamonds if ya got 'em. The rings-that-look-like-brass-knuckles trend works well here.

4. Designery Mu-Mu: According to Wikipedia, Rachel Zoe, pioneered the "Boho Chic" look. "This look consists of oversized jewelry, loose fitting dresses and shirts, paired with a slim frame." On normal framed people "the loose fitting dress," turban, and excessive jewelry may cause one to appear a new-aged religious zealot or just fat. So, throw a waist belt on!

Blustery Bag Lady

Why is impossible to dress like a self-respecting human at the first mention of blustery weather? I cannot begin to express how many people I have seen teetering down sidewalks today in puff coats and sweat pants! To paraphrase the venerable style-guru Jerry Seinfeld: “You know the message you're sending out to the world with these sweatpants? You're telling the world, 'I give up. I can't compete in normal society. I'm miserable, so I might as well be comfortable.’”

Now friends, I am not immune to this phenomenon, in fact my naked and sex-haired self stumbled in the closet this morning and returned with an 80’s sea-foam green cardigan and a pair of Ugg boots. Let’s just say that I ventured into work looking half Mister Rogers (R.I.P.) and half cave man. Why, you might ask, do so many people suffer from the inability to dress in cold weather?

I believe this a multi-faceted problem; the first being leg hair. My research shows that leg hair grows a helluva-lot faster when you’re getting goose-bumps all the time, and so, it is in great abundance during the winter. Extra leg hair, combined with the fact that it is too damned cold to take a shower (and the fact that I can’t afford the blades for my fancy-ass razor), means you face the day with Sasquatch legs. Leg hair of this caliber, ladies and gentleman, means either of two things: Jeans or Fancy Jeans. This is proven to make you feel lackluster and guilty for avoiding all of the beautiful Houndstooth and Tartan skirts sobbing in your closet, and so you throw in the towel, and put on a dated thrift-store sweater. It is a vicious, vicious cycle.

So don’t worry, girl-on-side-walk-with-rhinestone-butted-sweat-pants, I know how you feel. My jeans may be designery, but I too, let the weather get the better of me. Tomorrow, let’s at least try to put on some mascara, whadda ya say?

Pale Vs. Tan

Now that the temperature has dropped in most parts of the country, going to a tanning bed seems to be the popular thing to do. Women especially prefer to keep their summer tan through the winter. Over the years, different women have told me they believe tanning makes them happier and keeps them warm after coming from the cold weather. I will admit, I myself have gone to a tanning bed or two.

The truth is, a woman who goes to the tanning bed, or even spends more time than normal under the sun during the summer time, is more apt to aging quickly. This is also true for women or men who play outdoor sports or who have outdoor jobs. A person, especially in their early twenties, needs to consider if being tan this winter and getting wrinkles at a young age is more worth it than being pale and not getting wrinkles. There are many women out there who do what they can to stay out of the sun, and never enter a tanning bed, and they have beautiful skin.

Pale is looking so much hotter these days!

Wide Leg Trousers

The skinny pant have been a hot item for a while, and with good reason. It not only shows off your gorgeous legs, but when paired with 4-inch heels - it's an unstoppable sexy look. As we know, fashion constantly changes its rules - so, say good-bye to the skinny pant and hello wide leg trousers. The runways are bringing back the retro glam of Audrey Hepburn by letting feminine sophistication fill the present day women's closet. Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, and Tommy Hilfigier have perfected the wide legged trousers by pairing them up with whimsical blouses and form fitting tops. The colors most seen are white and caramel - giving you the option of playing around with jewelry and bag colors. For shorter girls, wear the pant with chunkier heels as it will accentuate your legs, and for taller girls - the style will look great with just a fancy pair of flats. The wide leg angle gives you a polished, professional, and playful look. I recommend you rummage through your mother's closet first, she may still have hers from back in the day - hey, you never know.

Falling for Zara

Most of the time, stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Zara can be very hit or miss. There are so many factors that go into what makes a great consumer friendly collection, from the materials used to the silhouettes that the designer creates. Fortunately for us, Zara’s November collection is a home run! Everything currently offered in the store is completely on point with this season’s most wearable trends. Not only that, but the materials used are soft, warm, and high quality, which isn’t always the case for such an affordable store. Nothing is worse than finding an item that looks good online, but feels scratchy or cheap in person. I’ve experienced this rather unfortunate situation far too many times, and I can tell you, with confidence, that you won’t experience even a hint of buyer’s remorse after purchasing any of these pieces. A few standout pieces from Zara’s November include cropped sweaters, silk blouses, corduroy shorts, and camel trousers. If you haven’t already done your holiday shopping or created your wish lists, I highly recommend that you add a few of these items on last minute. The best part of the collection is without a doubt the price range. All of the items featured in the image above are under $70 and available both in stores and online. Any piece on its own would make an incredible gift, whether it’s purchased for a friend or for yourself.

'Tis the Season

Now that our turkeys have been carved, stuffing has been served, and stomachs have been filled, it’s finally time to start thinking about (and shopping for!) the upcoming holiday season. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or anything in between, finding the perfect party dress is essential. Since I know how difficult and frustrating it can be to create the perfect holiday ensemble, I figured I would spare you the agony of scrolling through page after page of options and present you with a few of my new found favorites.

The first dress is the perfect winter LBD made by Juicy Couture. Its mini strapless silhouette is simple and classic, while the draped velvet skirt adds a subtly luxurious touch. I imagine this dress being perfect for a dinner or cocktail party when paired with classic pumps, a red clutch, and the fluffiest fur coat you can find. The result is a sexy and ridiculously comfortable look that you will be able to wear for many winters to come.

The embroidered polka dot sleeveless dress made by Marc Jacobs is a serious must-have for this season. Its scalloped lace skirt and polka dotted bodice come together to create the perfect feminine fifties-inspired dress. Though its quite pricey, it is very high quality and the camel color makes it timeless. Try wearing this dress with a knee-length peacoat, shimmery tights and nude or black heels. If your style is edgy rather than super feminine, a leather jacket and smoky eye can easily toughen it up.

Milly’s Juliet cocktail dress is a perfect mixture of my favorite recent trends- camel, ruffles, and sequins. The mixture of textures is unmatched by any dress I’ve seen, and the colors will complement any skin tone. This dress looks best when worn with bare legs and some shiny patent booties. Top it off with a head full of cascading curls and bold, bright red lips.

J'aime Mon Carre

I love my scarf, I love your scarf, and I certainly love luxury brand Hermés, two London pop-up stores dedicated to its iconic scarves. The first has already opened and sadly closed after three days of joy at the East London Rochelle School of art, Shoreditch. The second will thankfully be open until the 9th of December in West London’s Ledbury road. Both stores offer shoppers expert advice on how to style their Hermés scarves, and just in case you can't take it all in, due to over excitement, there are photographers in-store to record your look. Chances are it may very well be everything you could ever dream of in silk, colour prints and it well be. Whilst sadly you may not wake up on Christmas morning and find one propped under your Christmas tree, after a trip to these stores they are bound to be featured on many wish lists.

Carolyn Murphy: Best Friend and Muse

Carolyn Murphy amazes me. She has been around since I started obsessing over fashion magazines when I was in Junior High. Eight years have gone by and she is even more beautiful now than she was then.

She almost always appears in the first few pages of a magazine.

Murphy's been modeling for top names such as Estee Lauder, Jantzen, and Versace.

She is a muse. She's a natural. No matter how much or how little makeup is on her, she looks remarkable. Carolyn Murphy isn't perfect, and that is what makes her stand out. Her face is not symmetrical and she is not stick thin. She has broken the rules of the model stereotype. Murphy could be your best friend, the girl next door, just one of the guys, and the most beautiful girl in the room all wrapped into one. She is the ultimate package.

She may not be everywhere, like Caroline Trentini and Raquel Zimmerman, but she is an exquisite model. Carolyn Murphy is the kind of model you get excited to see because you do not see her on every other page. It is a treat to see her.

The Good, the Bad, and the Burlesque

I'm a big fan of so-bad-it's-good movies, especially ones involving pop stars and divas trying their hand at acting. Showgirls, Crossroads, even the abominable trash heap that was Mariah Carey's Glitter: what they lack in theatrical credibility and decent scripts, they make up for in sheer camp and hilariously quotable lines.

This is why I'll be heading out to see Burlesque as soon as possible. Judging from the glitzy, cheesy trailer, it's going to be more of a hot mess than an Academy Award blitz, but you can't knock a potential so-bad-it's-good movie until you try it. If nothing else, I'll at least get some decent makeup tricks from Christina Aguilera!

Cashmere: Bringing families together since the 18th century

Ah, holiday visits with the family; time for eating until you puke and getting a little tipsy with Grandma. Many of us will spend a significant amount of time deciding what to pack, in an attempt to appear that we are not just directionless twenty-somethings with a minor hang-over. There's this strange inherent need, during the holidays, to ensure our families of our legitimacy as productive members of society. The best way to do this, you ask? Cashmere.

Studies show Cashmere has long been associated with people who have their shit together. Though my black Armani Exchange sweater was found at Goodwill, my mother will be impressed that I had the forethought to invest in a "smart" piece that will last for ages. (Never mind my closet full of six inch heels.) My father will remark at it's "cuddliness" and remind me once again how grateful he is that my high-school days of hippie mu-mus and blue hair have ceased. Cashmere is also a great conversation topic for Grandmothers and when they learn of my new interest in the stuff they may remember a bunch of great pieces they have hidden away in their closets, just waiting for my gravy-fied little fingers. All of the merriment that ensues directly leads to father slipping me a twenty for avoiding political conversation!

And so, my friends, you now see the uniting powers of our favorite fabric species. This season, pick up some Cashmere for yourself, and a scarf or two for the fam!

The classic camel coat

It's that time of year again! With the bitter chill of winter upon us, we mourn the loss of the suns hot rays by wearing those mundane coats. We're all guilty. I know you own that dark (usually black) colored coat that sits in the closet until you feel that big gust of wind telling us it's time to bundle up. Luckily, the runways this season are saving us from the bitterness, as camel colored coats are a must have this season. Just like the color black, camel goes with everything you wear, not to mention it adds a little flair to you day. From blonde, caramel, and burnt toffee - there are a plethora of colors to choose from for any occasion, whether you're heading to work or going out to get the groceries. As a timeless piece, designers like Alexander Wang and Chloe have featured camel coats on their runway, but you don't have to spend an arm and a leg - H&M and the Gap have wonderful camel coats just under $70. Throw one on with long legged trousers and flats to keep it professional or you could make a statement by wearing skinny jeans and black knee high boots. No matter how you dress it, the camel coat is the hottest trend for the season and definitely on top of my Christmas list.

The Natural Look

In January, I dyed my hair a lighter blonde for the first time. Many people asked me why I dyed my hair because they said it was blonde enough before. That isn't exactly the best thing to hear for someone who just did something to their hair that they can't change overnight. I honestly feel as if I were treated more like a dumb blonde, and with less respect than I've ever been treated in my life.

In the past couple of months, when I've looked through many magazines, I've noticed that more women are growing out their lighter color. They are embracing their natural color again. From top model, Caroline Trentini, in the Express ads to Valentina Zeliaeva (a model who will appear young forever) in the Ralph Lauren to designer, Lauren Conrad, to singing sensation Fergie, to actresses Drew Barrymore and Jessica Biel. They all look absolutely amazing.

This movement to "The Natural Look" is empowering to all women. Women need to know they are naturally beautiful. They need to know they can look more beautiful, more real, more professional, more confident in their own skin, their own hair color.

P.S. This may not be true for every woman, but most women are meant to look the way they were created – with a little boost from mascara and bronzer. Also, I started transitioning my hair back to its original color, and I get more compliments on my hair color now than the ten months I had my hair the lightest blonde I could.

Necessary Knits = CHAOS Knits

It’s true that nothing is better than being completely cozy on the most frigid winter days. Most seasons, it’s hard to achieve that state of warmth without a ridiculous amount of layering or constantly keeping on a jacket. It can be made of wool, cashmere, or anything in between, depending on your preference of material. It can be personalized with a pattern, or kept neutral in a solid, wintery tone such as crimson or oatmeal. A chunky knit accessory this season is the most bold item you can buy. Though it is possible to head to the nearest H&M and purchase a mile long scarf that will ball up and look raggy in about a week, the ones that stand out among the rest are those that are truly special. On that same note, I also won’t recommend splurging on a high-end designer’s version, either. Lucky for you, CHAOS has its own knit line! Bewitched by Nikolet Kasmer

There’s no denying the industry touts a pretty face and rail-thin frame as what makes a model. But every so often, a devilish charm and particular aloofness can also skyrocket her straight to the top of the beauteous elite.

Although too soon to tell, the success of Hungarian model Nikolet Kasmer looks rather concrete. Attribute it to her pouty lips and flowing hair if you will, but Kasmer’s mysterious stare and European features makes for a deviant-type look all her own.

Originally from Eger, Hungary, this 5’10” blue-eyed beauty is represented by Art Models in New York. With a penchant for all things Steven Meisel, Kasmer is a true lover of the industry. This sultry stunner was also blessed with the ability to portray an intricate mix of angst and beauty in her pictures.

Wrapped in plastic - it's fantastic

If you've ever seen the first Toy Story movie, you'll remember Andy's nasty neighbor Sid who took toys and reconstructed them to resemble scary robotic creatures. Well, Margaux Lange has done the same thing, only - not so scary. Using parts of Barbie doll's, Margaux re-constructs evey part of the iconic toy - head to toe - into beautiful statement pieces. She hand crafts one of a kind necklaces, brooches, and bracelets - selling anywhere from $130-$220. Margaux's Plastic Body Series art is getting international acclaim! One of my favorite pieces is the Smiley Necklace made from 29 Barbie mouths, the colors and style's are AMAZING! Her line also includes a circular pin made out of Barbie arms and earrings made out of Barbie ears, not to mention a ring made out of Ken's abs...yes, you read that correctly - Ken's six pack on a ring, how could it be better? To some, the jewelry may sound a little creepy, which is understandable - wearing body parts around your own. However, when you see the fantastic work Margaux has done, you'd be surprised. Margaux has been published in many books and have been displayed in a number of art galleries. Her unique pieces of Barbie jewelry are quirky and cool, but still have a high end feel to it - which is exactly why I LOVE it!!

Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual

In an attempt to master the art of barely there makeup, I decided to spend $30 at Borders on Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual. If there’s anyone who knows how to create the perfect natural makeup look, it’s definitely Bobbi Brown. She’s been in the business of beauty for longer than almost all of her competitors, but she has yet to be outshined by any of them. The epitome of 'fresh': Tiana Tolstoi

You know a model is truly up-and-coming when the few tidbits found on the web about her are elusive and scarce. Yet, this fresh-faced beauty from Egypt is worth a mention (maybe even two) because of an undeniable charm, evident in her pictures.

Tiana Tolsti was discovered in Paris by an agent from New Madison. While those may be the only concrete facts known right now about Tolstoi , the industry's knack for idolizing ethnic beauties such as this, guarantees it's only matter of time until this ethereal face has a Wikipedia page all her own.

The Only Way is Vintage

There were no promises broken, or lies told, when the good people of Clerkenwell Vintage Fashion Fair guaranteed a beautiful selection of vintage clothes, shoes, handbags, hats, gloves, textiles & jewellery this Sunday. Housing all these wonderful pieces and their fabulous collectors was the equally glorious Old Finsbury Town Hall. The charm of this setting and all of its 1885 Art Noveau charm was enough alone to justify any trek through London Town on the greyest Sunday of the wonderful winter season. Given that the vintage artifacts were as impressive as their surroundings decorative features, made for a lovely and very atmospheric glimpse at the less commercial and genuinely honest side of vintage fashions, and its lovers. Think shift dresses, floral prints, hate it or love it fur fur fur, pea collars, lace trims and golden treasure. It did indeed feel only what I can imagine opening a treasure chest in a very old attic might have felt like. For those who fancied a cuppa and also suffered sweet tooth syndrome the tea rooms were the ultimate school hall experience.  For those who may have over indulged at the cake counter the alterations room was the next stop. With the most charming hairdressing set up just on the edge of the hallway the up do's being created and cemented with hairspray indeed ensured that the starlets and gentlemen at the Clerkenwell Vintage Fair received the ultimate experience. This was the last of these fairs before the end of the year, it certainly leaves something to look forward to in the new year.

A Ph.D. in Hipster Studies?

The rise of the contemporary hipster - think of the typical American Apparel-bedecked, large eyeglasses-wearing, unknown electro band-listening man or woman who either lives in Williamsburg or pretends to - has officially entered the realm of the academic.

After a successful symposium held in collaboration with The New School in NYC, n+1 magazine is releasing an essay collection in which intellectuals write hipster cultural criticism; there's a transcript of the actual symposium itself, plus a great article about a recent clash between hipsters and Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn. Mark Greif, founder of n+1 magazine, also has a great essay in a recent New York magazine. Worth checking out if you're of the mind that hipsterdom goes deeper than ironic sweaters and Animal Collective albums.

Boots Are A Woman's Best Friend

In the Mid West, the weather has more mood swings then a woman pregnant for the first time. One day you will be wearing short sleeves and shorts. The next day you could be wearing layers under a winter coat with jeans and leather boots. Either ways, the leaves on the trees have completely changed colors and every day is considered visually pleasing.

After this weekend, I have a feeling the winter-coat-weather is going to stick. You could walk through a little boutique or down the sidewalk and see women in an assortment of different boots. Tall, tan leather boots have become in-style recently in the Mid West. Though about a year ago in New York City, my best friend attending NYU started wearing them. That’s how it works here.

The best part about boots is that there isn’t just one type. Uggs are perfect for the cozy look with long flannel top, just make sure you are wearing them for function and not to make a fashion statement. Black Leather or suede flat boots are perfect for that classic jeans and all black-everything-else look. The black buckled heel-boots that just cover the ankle is perfect with a dress or a skirt. Last, but, not least, you can’t rule out the leather heel-boots that rise up to your knees. These are perfect for when your trying to add a little sophisticated flair to you're look.
